Parents of older children, in particular, pay more attention to letting their children read graded books themselves, rather than deliberately taking their children to do parent-child reading and let them listen to stories.
So what is the relationship between parent-child English and autonomous reading? Are they the same thing? Can they replace each other?
Here I want to tell you the difference between "parent-child reading" and "independent reading".
Picture books are different from self-reading graded books.
We will find that the vocabulary of picture books is far more difficult than that of primary graded books, because picture books are suitable for parent-child reading and have strong stories, and children's vocabulary is not considered in the choice of vocabulary. Therefore, for younger children, parents and children often read together, or teachers use them when reading stories to their children in class.
For example, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a picture book suitable for kindergarten children. There is a saying, "Then he chewed a hole in the cocoon, squeezed it out, and then …", in which the word "chew" was not read by kindergarten and grade one children themselves. So it is suitable for parents and teachers to read.
Self-reading books often have sentences like "I like cats", and children can read independently. In other words, children can read these books without their parents and understand their meanings.
Graded reading materials are characterized by:
1. The difficulty of books is from simple to difficult with the increase of levels, showing a step.
2. A large number of high-frequency words are used
3. There are many repeated sentences and phrases in the initial reading, and the complexity of the sentences increases gradually.
4. Fonts change from big to small, so children can refer to and spell.
5. The illustrations are gradually decreasing and the proportion of words is gradually increasing.
6. Transition from autonomous reading to graded reading.
That is to say, if parents in China can't receive systematic training in graded reading like American children, how can they guide their children to choose graded reading that suits them? Here are a few principles.
1. Choose appropriate reading materials.
Although some graded books seem simple and say they are suitable for children aged 5-7, they are actually far more difficult than children's literacy. For example, I can read the 1 series of books, which are difficult for the first-year children in school.
Therefore, you should not only look at the level of reading, but also look at the level of children. How to judge whether a book is suitable for you? I mentioned the "five fingers rule" before. Open any page of the book and count the words you don't understand-
0- 1 word you don't understand: this book is too simple.
1-3 words you don't understand: this book is the perfect choice.
Four words you don't understand: You can challenge them.
Five words you don't understand: This book is too difficult.
2. You can't just read the same set of books.
Some parents bought a grading book for their children and have been using it, but it is too monotonous for their children. They should choose more books for their children to read at the same time. Vertical reading is better than horizontal reading, and they can read other favorite books freely to achieve nutritional collocation.
Children don't just read a set of graded books, but each child has a reading bag with all kinds of books suitable for him to read at the same time.
3. Pay attention to reading non-fiction books.
Most graded reading materials are stories, but in fact, children also need to consume some non-fiction books. For example, children's non-fiction books in Guotu are very good, from animals to buildings to natural disasters, which are rare information books.
Today, I will focus on selecting some books to introduce the most popular sets of reading books. There are two kinds of reading materials in the United States-novels and non-novels, so I will choose several sets of good reading materials according to the categories.

What I can read is a collection of famous works, including a single book and many complete sets of books, such as Cookie Dog, Little Hairy Man and Babe Bear. It can not only cultivate children's persistent reading enthusiasm, but also cultivate children's healthy mind and a pair of discerning eyes.
There are six levels in this series.
My first level: mainly for parents to read to their children.
I shared my first reading: parents and children read together.

Step 4 read
Langdon's Step into Reading is divided into five levels, each with 30 volumes, step by step, from shallow to deep, suitable for preschool children to primary school students. 1 level is story-oriented, and the second level goes beyond stories, adding rich contents such as mathematics, popular science and daily life.
If Oxford isNo. 1, then Langdon is one of the most popular graded books in American English, which has been selling well in the United States for 25 years. It is the choice of many parents to go to school from Random House.
The first stage of Langdon into Reading is suitable for English enlightenment, with 2-8 years old as the main stage. One or two sentences per page, the baby carries out parent-child reading, and more is to read stories, listen to audio and cultivate a sense of rhythm; Training semi-autonomous reading is slightly larger, and cultivating the awareness of spelling; Bigger, use this set of books to make the transition to independent reading. Children who have already gone to school with zero basic English can also start from this set.
The second and third stages are suitable for 4- 10 children with a little basic English knowledge. Vocabulary and sentences are slightly more complicated than the first stage. Emphasize the cultivation of children's English reading ability, interesting stories and intuitive images. Repeated common words make children quickly enter the reading state, guiding children to read independently from guessing words step by step.
5. My reading library
Usborne Publishing House is one of the most famous and largest children's book publishers in Britain and even in the world, which is famous for its creativity and innovation. It launched three sets of graded reading materials:
My first library, my first reading library (50 introductory books)
My second library, my reading library (initial 50 volumes)
My third library, the American Reading Collection.
These three sets of books are divided into different levels. For example, my first library contains 50 books, which are divided into three stages.
These three stages are natural spelling, short stories and slightly longer stories. The length gradually changes from a short sentence of several words to no more than 150 words, and then to no more than 250 words. This is a natural and advanced process for children.
Non-fiction
1. National Geographic children's readers
Speaking of popular science classification books, this set of national geographic children's classification books is the first choice for the combination of popular science and classification. It is a set of English original popular science graded reading books that let children "look up at the stars and keep their feet on the ground".
The compilation of this set of books has a very scientific match with children's reading age and cognitive level. Children with different reading levels have suitable bibliographies, learn about the world and learn English through reading. Children have been exposed to such world-class popular science books since childhood, and their knowledge, vision and ideological level will be greatly improved.
It has four reading levels:
Pre-reading: ready to start, suitable for children aged 3-5.
1 grade: the first step of reading, suitable for children aged 4-8.
Level 2: start reading independently, suitable for children aged 5- 10.
Level 3: fluent independent reading, suitable for children over 6- 12 years old.
2.DK reader
DK Readers, published by the famous British DK Publishing House, is one of the few graded books with documentary style on the market, which closely combines encyclopedia enlightenment with interesting stories. In addition to the wonderful dinosaur stories, there are more than 30 popular science themes, which let children appreciate the wonders of the world and natural development, greatly satisfy their thirst for knowledge and broaden their knowledge horizons.
In addition to being a super-high-level product, it also broke the tradition of DK popular science books, which were divided into 36 volumes according to the theme and graded in three different age stages. Each level has 12 volumes, which are pre-level 1, level 1 and level 2. The difficulty is from small to large, which is convenient for children to pick up and read.
