Going abroad for a party, mom Jie Jiang.
Duke, a Harvard university in the southern United States, is currently ranked eighth in the National University Rankings of American News (once in the top five, but occasionally in the top ten). Because of its unique geographical location (most top universities in the United States are in the north), Duke University has many talents from the south (especially students! ) both academically and physically.
Duke University/KLOC-0.5 million students, half male and half female, with about 6,500 undergraduates. The scale of the school is like this: there are many alumni, professors, academic courses, enthusiasts and people with bad hearts. This scale can be said to be appropriate.
Someone once asked me which is better, Duke or Swarthmore? Yes, in fact, the admission conditions of these two schools are similar, but the styles and types of schools are very different, so there is no way to compare them, dear. If two words are used to distinguish Swarthmore from Duke, the former is "elite" and the latter is "competitiveness". The core of the elite is the "qi" of the nobility, which is small and beautiful and does not fall behind. Competitiveness is pioneering and represents infinite possibilities, because there are many people from Niu Wa in the southern United States who can open it in minutes.
If you are a competitive student, like the weather in the south, like the open and diverse atmosphere of big U, and like basketball, then you may like it very much.
As a first-class national university, Duke University has outstanding academic level in biology, medicine, nursing, engineering, law, English, business, history, physics, mathematics, statistics, public policy, diagnostic psychology, politics, sociology and other fields. Duke Mathematics Magazine is one of the top five mathematics magazines in the world. Considering the number and frequency of articles published in top academic journals, it may be more difficult to publish an article on it than the science weekly Nature and Science, which is highly respected by China people.
In addition to Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, Duke's vocational colleges, such as Law School, Religious College, Medical College, Nursing College, Pratt Institute of Engineering, Fuka Business School, Sanford School of Policy and Nicholas Institute of Environment, all have national first-class academic standards. Although among these graduate schools, only the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering recruit undergraduates, other vocational colleges still provide a large number of academic resources and reserves for undergraduates:
Duke Medical College ranks eighth in the American Graduate School of Journalism and Medicine.
Duke University Hospital ranks 12 in China.
The College of Nursing ranks sixth in the national nursing colleges.
* * * Policy Institute ranking 16, among which environmental policy and management ranked second in the United States.
The comprehensive ranking of Fuku Business School is 13, ranking 4th in EMBA program, 5th in marketing and 6th in NPO operation.
Duke University has many famous friends, such as former US President Nixon, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Soong Ching Ling's father Song Jiashu (the first international student at Duke University) and Apple CEO Cook (below; He is a typical scholar from an ordinary family in the south), Bill Gates' wife Melinda (it is said that she has a double bachelor's degree in computer science and economics), celebrities and CEOs from all walks of life (including CEOs of companies such as Pepsi and GE), many retired NBA players in sports, coach of the American national basketball team Shashevski, and many Nobel Prize winners in physics, chemistry, literature, medicine and even Pulitzer Prize. There are 1 1 people who have won the Nobel Prize related to Duke University in history, many of whom are current professors. In short, there are many stars.
Located in Durham, North Carolina, 20 minutes drive from Raleigh-Durham Airport. It has an enviable 35 square kilometers of land, including the famous Duke Forest. Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill constitute one of the largest scientific and technological research centers in the United States: the North Carolina Research Triangle Park. Many biological and technology companies have also set up bases here, which provides unique convenience for students to find internships and jobs. Lenovo's headquarters is not far from Duke, and there are also companies such as IBM, GlaxoSmithKline and Fidelity nearby, which are rich in job opportunities. At the same time, it is also a region with a high proportion of doctoral degrees in the United States. North Carolina has a southern climate, with four unclear seasons and low living standards and prices. There is no direct flight from China. You have to transfer at Raleigh-Durham.
Teacher mark
"Duke is not a good place, just a good source of information."
When I ask Duke students what they think of this sentence, I almost always get their approval. To be fair, there have been many complaints. Duke University and even many American universities have primitive social scenes. The Brotherhood is an interest group with strict hierarchy, high threshold and fierce competition. Simple groups of new friends can be broken through careful consideration and unremitting efforts by all parties. If you are not an extrovert, and don't like you sweating and clumsily waving to others, then this is not the place you want to go, and your social life is closed.
I once saw a performance of "The Duke's Monologue", which caused many audiences to sing. Duke University's social culture is influenced by gender-based violence, depression and racism. The monologue student said that he hated the person who asked him to "go out of the bedroom to socialize", and he admitted that he would rather stay in bed and relive the Star Wars trilogy. He hates those drinking parties organized by the university student union. He doesn't know where other students who don't like parties are.
Open campus activities such as heat wave and old duke are regarded as "extroverted activities", and there are few activities for "introverted" students. Poetry? Write lyrics and compose music? Comedy show? Many activities experienced by the university are gone.
In addition to the space for organizing these activities, a system is needed to provide such opportunities for introverted students to find their own interest groups. Maybe universities have no responsibility to encourage introverted students to make friends, but the behavior of introverted people makes me wonder whether these groups will naturally look for each other. If anything, they naturally exclude themselves from the group.
Some student organizations in Duke University are trying to find new directions and ways to organize activities. Almost every semester, organizations introduce new social ways to meet people with different personalities, such as drinking tea and making friends, sharing their enthusiasm for mathematics or computers, and so on. From the perspective of several people I know personally, this seems to be insufficient.
Perhaps, when their social life is no longer limited to fraternities, sports teams and cocktail parties, when their social life is no longer graded, and when their hobbies are no longer competitions, they will see the ideal Duke University appear in the college handbook.
Jiangta
Duke is studying for a master's degree in CS.
Duke doesn't feel like one of the typical schools that China people love to apply to. For example, UCI is in Stanford, New York, and Columbia, which everyone will apply for, and the proportion of China people applying for Duke is much less than theirs. Before coming out, I was particularly afraid that there would be too many people in our country, and I would be lazy in our circle. After I came out, I found that I actually played with foreigners a lot, so my English improved a lot, which was roughly in line with my expectations. (ECE maybe there are more people in our country, and other departments are ok. )
The campus is very big and beautiful. Like the Sarah Garden mentioned upstairs, many alumni will take wedding photos in it, which is beautiful in spring. The school is divided into three campuses: East, West and Middle. Graduate students generally teach in the west campus, and some humanities departments in the east campus may teach there. The whole middle school campus is Sarah Garden. If you want to take the school bus from the east campus to the west campus.
There are all kinds of activities in the school. You are welcome to participate. If you want to blend in, it's good to participate in these activities and play with Americans. The course of study depends on the department, which varies greatly from department to department. Everyone's department is better. Generally speaking, it is good to do homework and projects, and the pressure of staying up late will not be too great, but the friends of econ department are under great pressure. They must stay in the library on Friday night and review all night before the exam.
It feels like a big national park near Durham. I often describe to my friends that there are as many trees as people here in Beijing. The air is particularly good, and it feels like a holiday place in China and a forest oxygen bar all day. Generally speaking, if there is no car, the quality of life will be much worse. There is only one Chinese supermarket, one LL and one outlet in Durham. It takes more than 20 minutes to drive from Duke to these three places. If you live in an ordinary supermarket, it will be very difficult without a car. Generally speaking, everything is built next to the expressway, and everything goes through the expressway.
By the way, there are only three or four restaurants in China. Mainly Sichuan food. The standard is relatively common. The number of Korean food is similar to that of Japanese food. Generally speaking, there are not many Asian cuisines, and other cuisines will be better. Legend has it that this side is the most delicious town in the south.
The rent here is relatively cheap. If it is shared, it can be as cheap as 300-400, and 600-700 is not bad for ordinary people. Compared with new york, it is satisfactory. Prices are generally not high. Before, a friend applied for an internship in Net App. They donated 18 yuan in North Carolina and 34 yuan in California. This is a standard.
The library of Duke University has the third largest collection in the United States! This is probably why Duke University is a particularly excellent university. School buildings are old Gothic, modern and creatively renovated, such as the West Campus Union.
Two ghosts
By this time, it has been more than three weeks in Duke. Considering that Hongkong, Macau and Taiwan Province are places I have been to before, I must have had a lot of experiences when I first came to English-speaking countries. I am a doctor of chemistry. I have to say that I am very satisfied with this project, because I feel that there are all kinds of challenges in the right place and at the right time, so I can make a plan and work harder, that's all.
I am an undergraduate. I am Bo, the head of the team is the lead singer, and the etiquette and team leader also travel and swim from time to time and get together for meetings. Really, I think I must be Bo, a university general who has been depressed for too long in the college entrance examination in Hubei Province. Frankly speaking, I only studied for exams in my college career. I don't know why I studied chemistry, but I feel better about the careful combination of school chemistry and homework. Under the exam-oriented education, my grades are still good, but my understanding of chemistry work is still relatively rough.
The first feeling is that it's so beautiful here that it doesn't need decoration. I have traveled all over Taiwan Province Province before. In contrast, most of them are quiet and beautiful, feeling that there is no pollution in the world. I will never get tired of looking at the sky. I can stand in the sun for a long time under chapel, and I will always see squirrels there without pratt's class. Perkins satisfied your fantasy of a perfect library.
The weather is often sunny, with rainbows and rain. Haha, I have been here for three weeks and met twice, which is a wonderful stay.
As for the food, everyone at the orientation party has been eating hamburger tortilla pizza for a long time. That was good. After eating for a long time, they would rather bring their own lunch. Panda food actually doesn't need orange chicken, including Beijing beef. I think the rest is acceptable, and I also want to understand that they have improved the taste of Americans. Fortunately, when I first came to the new school canteen, I opened the Western Union and spent a lot of money to decorate it. The slogan is to be the first canteen in America. However, I think it is impossible to surpass UCLA and Cornell. After all, things are generally safe or made by themselves, and the working people are honored! However, Japanese Lamian Noodles salad and some dessert snacks are delicious, and all kinds of rice side dishes can be eaten, but attention should be paid to distinguishing the tastes. After all, rice is not only eaten in China.
I really don't feel so inconvenient as I said before. Du cun is a village, so cars are very important. When we first arrived, we all discussed taking everyone to buy buy at a fixed time every week, and gave them various membership discounts. Dawn costco Wal-Mart target Kroger, a supermarket, can buy almost everything you use in China. As for shopping, now you only go to the South Point. To tell the truth, you can't visit that place for two days. You can think of all brands, including a large food court and many restaurants. The shopping experience is good. After all, there are few people and big places.
Back to why I like this project, first of all, I think the professors here also include staff, who are friendly and respect students' ideas and interests. I was really not interested in chemistry before, but after I came here, I unexpectedly began to like the scientific research atmosphere here. Without oppression, interest drives you to start your scientific research, which is advocated here. In the future, I like Duke. I have all kinds of people to help me with all kinds of formalities. There is no doubt that my spoken English is poor. As long as you say it, I am not afraid that the problem can't be solved. Later, after I settled down, I also found dance organizations and singing groups here. I used to think that these were sideline businesses, which would delay my study and scientific research. At least at present, the mainstream value orientation in China is like this, but the general feeling here is that you can do whatever you want in your spare time to ensure the time for study and scientific research. Prof will not rush you, and the time is entirely at my disposal.
