What is a mathematical modeling contest?
The National Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Competition (CUMCM) is a competition jointly sponsored by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and the Chinese Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Its purpose is to stimulate students' enthusiasm for learning mathematics, improve their comprehensive ability to use computer technology to build mathematical models and solve practical problems, encourage students to actively participate in extracurricular scientific and technological activities, broaden their knowledge, cultivate innovative spirit and cooperative consciousness, and promote the reform of college mathematics teaching system, teaching content and teaching methods.

The competition starts from 1992 and is held once a year. After the competition starts, the competition topics will be posted on the designated website for each team to download, and each team will complete the answers and hand in the papers within three days. During the competition, the team members can use various books, computers and software to browse online.

Competition topics generally come from practical problems, which has great flexibility for contestants to exert their creativity. Participants should complete a paper according to the requirements of the topic, including the hypothesis, the establishment and solution of the model, the design and computer realization of the calculation method, the analysis and test of the results, and the improvement of the model. Competition awards are based on the rationality of assumptions, the creativity of modeling, the correctness of results and the clarity of text expression.

There are national first prize, second prize, provincial first prize, provincial second prize and provincial third prize in the competition.
