Why do children rise from middle grade to senior grade, and their math scores and self-confidence drop rapidly? What should parents and teachers do to rebuild their children's math ability? Lin Tiancheng, who teaches at Linsen Elementary School in Zhongli District of Taoyuan and is also a creative teacher, found that senior students have an insurmountable "math wall" and need the help of teachers and parents. Lin Tiancheng gave three pieces of advice to parents to help their children overcome this learning difficulty.

Many children in the middle and lower grades get full marks in mathematics, regardless of the usual exams, mid-term exams or the total scores of the semester. Moreover, there are more than one or two such excellent children, and perhaps more than two-thirds of the mathematics ratings are "excellent". How did you become "bad" immediately after entering senior three?

From the experience of teaching senior students and children's cognitive development in recent years, there are three actions that help to lay a good foundation for children's mathematics.

Action 1: Recognize that score is not equal to strength.

Before laying the foundation, I want to clarify a myth with you, that is, "score is not equal to strength"! The math scores of middle and lower grades are "too sweet" because most units only focus on one specific ability at a time, such as only learning addition or multiplication. As long as you have a strong memory and practice skillfully, it is extremely easy to get full marks. But other abilities such as logical reasoning, induction and deduction ability and abstract analysis are rarely recognized in the exam.

Since the fifth grade, the study of each unit of mathematics is no longer a single ability, but the positive and negative arguments go hand in hand, and it is more complicated and difficult to teach children the truth of conservation and reversibility. After the first regular exam in the fifth grade, both children and parents met with a "bolt from the blue" and questioned through various channels: What's wrong with children's mathematics?

Although this has something to do with "teaching materials, teaching methods and teaching", I must also say: "This is the common occupation of parents and teachers in Taiwan Province Province! In the middle and lower grades, we are afraid that failure and injury will create their excellent appearance. As a result, children live in the illusion of "thinking that they are good at math". "The kindness of adults makes children's math confidence suffocate early.
