20 17 was elected as the president of the international Federation of industrial and applied mathematics (the first person in Asia), and in the same year won the outstanding contribution award of the American Institute of industrial and applied mathematics (the first Chinese); 20 18 was elected as the member and standing committee member of the 13th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In May, 20021,he was elected as the vice chairman of the 10th National Committee of China Association for Science and Technology.
A summary of scientific research in Yuan Yaxiang:
Yuan Yaxiang's work on algorithm design and convergence analysis of trust region method is groundbreaking. Especially, a series of important convergence theorems are obtained for the study of trust region method for nonsmooth optimization, and the necessary and sufficient conditions for superlinear convergence are given.
Therefore, it won the only first prize in the 1984 postgraduate thesis competition of the Department of Mathematics, Cambridge University, England, and the second prize in the first international numerical analysis award for young people in London, England. He gave the optimality conditions of two spherical trust region subproblems and proved the "1/2 conjecture" of truncated yoke gradient method.
In the theoretical research of quasi-Newton method, Yuan Yaxiang cooperated with American scientists to prove the global convergence of a kind of quasi-Newton method, which is one of the most important achievements of nonlinear programming algorithm theory in 1980s. Dai Yuan method proposed by him and student Dai Mihong is considered as one of the four main methods of nonlinear yoke gradient method.
He also pioneered the combination of trust region method and traditional line search method to construct a new calculation method, pioneered the method of constructing quadratic model subproblem by using non-quadratic model information, and proposed non-quasi-Newton method.
