The United States * * * has six awards, namely, outstanding winner American Award, short-listed American Award nomination, meritorious winner American Award, honorary award American Award, successful participant award and unsuccessful participant award. These awards are abbreviated as O, F, M, H, S and U respectively.
At present, American college students' mathematical modeling competitions are divided into MCM and ICM, and both competitions are conducted with unified standards. MCM: There are high requirements for the contestants' mathematical model literacy and modeling ability. Generally, A is a continuous problem, B is a discrete problem, and C is related to big data and data mining.
ICM: Generally speaking, the problems involved are macroscopic and complicated. Participants are required to grasp the main line of the problem and weigh the macro and micro, the whole and the details. ICM has three problems, D is generally related to network science or optimization, E is related to environmental science, and F is related to policy and social science, mainly discussing modeling in social science.
1985 founded a university-level competition called "Mathematical Modeling Competition" with the support of the American Science Foundation. Its purpose is to encourage university teachers and students to clarify, analyze and propose solutions to various practical problems with uncertain scope. Through this structure, teachers and students are encouraged to actively participate, and the process of building a complete model is emphasized. It is a completely open competition, with only a few unrestricted practical questions from any field every year.
Students take part in the competition in groups of three, choose a topic within four days, complete the whole process of mathematical modeling of practical problems, and write a paper on the restatement, simplification, hypothesis and rationality of the problem, the establishment and solution of the mathematical model, the test and improvement of the model, the advantages and disadvantages of the model and the self-evaluation of its possible application scope.

The competition is open to students from China and overseas, and they can form teams freely. Participants must be students, and cross-grade and cross-major teams are allowed, and cross-school teams are not allowed. The determination of the competition group is based on the highest academic qualifications of the players. Each team is allowed to have at most one instructor, and the instructor must be a full-time college teacher, and the team can also have no instructor.
