Typesetting of Math Notes
In the era of information explosion, we have a strong desire for new knowledge, but we also have a sense of scarcity and worry that our knowledge is outdated, so we look for resources everywhere, sign up for online classes, subscribe to various columns ..... We hoard a lot of classes, spend a lot of money, and find ourselves anxious when we are busy. Stop and think, you must admit the fact that no matter how you study day and night, you can't keep up with the growth of knowledge. Therefore, compared with endless collection and hoarding, how to absorb and utilize it efficiently is more worthy of efforts.

I've always been a slow-witted person with a poor sense of direction, let alone know my way. I haven't been to the supermarket, so I may not be able to get out. Poor memory, things assigned by others, you have to write them down, otherwise you will forget; Mathematics is not good, lack of logic, reading science fiction is very hard. Therefore, in my life, I especially rely on paper and pen. Although there are all kinds of advanced and convenient electronic equipment, I still keep a small notebook every day and keep the habit of taking paper notes. I think it is more practical to write it down. (Note: If you feel that you don't meet the above characteristics, please stop reading. )

However, writing has its advantages. Let's talk about taking notes this time.

Cornell notes? It was invented by Dr. Walter Parker of Cornell University to help students take class notes more effectively. This method is also called 5R note-taking. Its biggest feature is to divide a page into three areas. It is a method of combining recording with learning, thinking with application, especially suitable for attending classes and reading notes.

The so-called 5R comes from the English initials of its five steps.

1, record. In the process of listening or reading, remember as many meaningful arguments, concepts and other lecture contents as possible in the main column (divide a page of the notebook into left, small and right parts, with the right side as the main column and the left side as the auxiliary column).

2. reduce. Summarize (simplify) these arguments and concepts concisely in the memory column, that is, the sub-column as soon as possible after class.

3. recite. Cover the main column, only use the notes in the memory column, and describe the class content as perfectly as possible.

4. reflect. Distinguish your thoughts, opinions and experiences from the lecture content, write them in a separate part of a card or notebook, add a title and index, make an outline, abstract and classify them. And file it at any time.

5. review. Spend about ten minutes reviewing your notes quickly every week, mainly by looking at the memory column first and the main column appropriately.

The official schematic diagram is as follows, divided into three sections: the note column in the main column of the note column, the clue column in the sub-column of the prompt column and the summary column below.

According to my personal experience, the paper used for Cornell notes should not be too small. A4 square paper is recommended, for one thing, the page space is large enough, and for another, it is convenient for marking and typesetting.

What I did was different from the official map, and the sidebar was left on the right side of the paper, because I was still used to writing it on the left side of the main area of my notes. As for the following summary column, it is often not reserved, but written separately with post-it notes afterwards and pasted in the appropriate place.

In these five steps, recording, induction and reflection correspond to the three sections of notes respectively, while reciting and reviewing are efforts other than notes. Review the main contents with the help of the clues in the sidebar of your notes, and then deepen your memory through regular review to help you think and extend. Don't underestimate this simple division. The simplified steps in the sidebar are actually very useful. In response to that sentence, reading and learning means "from thin to thick" and "from thick to thin". The former is a process of learning and accepting, while the latter is a process of digestion and refining. To really learn something, you have to chew and digest, extract the key points, internalize the knowledge, and merge with the known things, which is your own.

Bullet Journal is a method of hand account recording designed by Ryder Carrol, a foreign professional web designer. So it is actually a kind of handwriting, but I really like it and have been using it in my own handwriting for many years.

The core of the bullet diary is short, small and fast. The so-called "bullet" is a concise short sentence, which is mainly divided into three types: task, event and note.

Let's enjoy the bullet diary published by foreign note writers first. It's very fresh and beautiful!

Unlike long speeches or reading notes, bullet diaries are used in the management of daily chores and some small memos, and I use them in my own work schedule.

Personal habits should be listed in the notebook every day, whether it is work tasks or daily life, with the task list, and the completion should be recorded.

Simply put,

The bullet is just a symbol+short sentence.

As shown in the figure (er ... to be honest, my task now is to practice calligraphy ...)

A task, like sending an email, is generally the smallest executable item, and you will know what to do when you see it. Here we should pay special attention to the difference between "task" and "project", such as the preparation for the annual meeting. This is a project, which involves many subtasks that can be further divided. Each subtask must be specific, clear and executable, so we should avoid generalizations.

An event only records special things that happened, such as receiving gifts, releasing Jeff's new single, and having an eclipse tonight. It just happened objectively. You don't need to do anything, but you want to write it down.

Note, with high flexibility, is used to record information, which is equivalent to a miniature note, such as a sentence you see, an excerpt from a book, a skill in using software, etc.

In addition to these foundations, many people will set their own unique symbols. For example, I use the black triangle to represent the song that touched me that day, and I use the luminous bulb to represent the sudden inspiration. No matter how you set it, as long as you define your own symbols and can understand them.

Bullet diaries have a high degree of freedom and personalization. From the overall setting, you can arrange any topic you want to record, such as:

From the content typesetting, you can also design it into the form you want according to your personal needs. Therefore, the books I use to keep a bullet diary are all blank squares, and the inner pages are all drawn by myself, so that I can change the typesetting according to the actual needs of each month and week, without being limited by the printing style of the regular schedule book.

The working day is simple in black and white. It is easier to draw squares only with highlighter color blocks on the task markers. You can change colors according to your mood every week. When you are free during the holiday, you can decorate small pictures with paper tape at will, and add a few simple hand-painted pictures to your usual records. When you are in a good mood, you will make your pink heart bubble, and when you are in a low mood, you will draw a crying villain. Adult life will not express your emotions in reality at will. When you open your notebook, you will write and draw, and all kinds of moods will have original expressions.

The manual in the form of bullet diary helps to record and check the to-do list at any time and visualize the completion of your own project. For example, some people use it to manage their weight, prepare for exams, learn English, and even drink 8 glasses of water every day to supervise the implementation. The whole process is easy to review and review, and all the tasks and items carried out in the past year are traceable.

My records combined with David Allen's GTD(getting things dong) task management system can well complete the closed loop of inbox (event collection)-schedule-execution-feedback. For me, by writing down what has been agreed and what needs to be remembered, I can not spend my time on "remembering what I want to do", so that my brain can free up energy and concentrate on what I want to do, thus using my time more efficiently.

The difference between paper notes and electronic notes is that handwriting is slow and looks inefficient, but in fact, many times "slow is fast." I'm not abandoning electronics. On the contrary, I am also using Daoyun Notes, Nut Cloud, OneNote, etc. Manage my various materials. We can type a string of words easily and quickly with intelligent input method, but in some aspects, handwritten notes still have irreplaceable advantages. The gap between pen and paper can leave you more room for thinking and integration. The texture of the pen and paper, the sense of space, the temperature, and even the smell of ink will all affect your memory.

Finally, let's talk about mind mapping. Tony Buzan, the founder of mind map, described our thinking activities in a visual form, which allowed us to give full play to the creativity of thinking and record our thinking inspiration. The picture below is the entry map given by Baidu Encyclopedia, which is a hand-drawn mind map to explain "what is a mind map".

From this, we can intuitively see that mind map is a form of combining pictures and texts, which shows the hierarchical and logical relations of themes at all levels and establishes the memory link between subject words, images and colors. It is a way of thinking in images, emphasizing the right brain, image memory and free divergent association. If Cornell's notes are suitable for "comprehensible memory" and "structured thinking" of subject knowledge, then mind mapping is more suitable for "brainstorming" creative activities.

The above eight thinking map models are tools used by American primary school teachers to inspire children to think and establish logic when teaching English, natural science and social science. These eight mind maps are:

Chart-Define a chart in the context, and define one thing.

Bubble diagram-bubble diagram describing properties, describing the properties and characteristics of things.

Double bubble chart-compare and contrast double bubble chart, compare and contrast.

Tree diagram-classification tree diagram, classification

Flow chart-sequence flow chart, sequence

Multiple flowcharts-causal multiple flowcharts, causal relationship

Brace maps- local-global surround graph, local and global

Bridge Map-View Analogy Bridge Map, Analogy

(Image data from Zhihu)

In our own life, it is very suitable to use mind maps to outline, organize ideas and take notes, and we don't have to draw them ourselves. Now there are many mindmanager that can help us draw easily.

For example, the following picture is a mind map of the learning content of Active Discipline for 0-3 Years Old compiled by X-mind after listening to a micro-lesson on birth control and reading the book Active Discipline. (Click to enlarge)

Create a keyword and select various built-in models to display the content. Mind maps made by X-mind can be easily edited and saved, and it is no problem to supplement and modify them later. When viewing, each sub-topic can be expanded and scaled freely. There is a paid version of the advanced features, but for me, the free version is enough.

It is not enough to make and use mind maps to use a whole article, but this is just a point.

Finally, no matter which method is adopted, there is only one core principle, that is, "apply what you have learned". Free from the restrictions of form and the burden of tools, we collect all the information and learn all the knowledge in order to be useful. Collecting is not equal to learning, hoarding is not equal to owning, browsing is not equal to internalization, and information is not equal to knowledge.

Why do you say, "We have heard a lot of truth, but we still have a hard time?"

Because there is still a long distance between thinking (knowing), learning and acting, as far as 18 Mei Su Chang. (Ah ... professional Amway "Nirvana in Fire")

Growth is to think about it before you do it. Try to make records more efficient. There are many ways, and there is always one that suits you. ?
