Hua was the only celebrity with China surname in the late Qing Dynasty, and also an important participant in the Westernization Movement.

Hua (1833— 1902) was a mathematician, translator and educator in the late Qing Dynasty. Dangkou Town, Wuxi County, Jiangsu Province. Born in an official family, he loved mathematics as a teenager and read all kinds of mathematics books at that time. When I was young, I went to Shanghai to associate with the famous mathematician Li. Li recommended western algebra and calculus to him. 186 1 year, hired by Zeng Guofan, he and his fellow countryman friend Xu Shou (word) went to Anqing Ordnance Institute to draw mechanical drawings and built the earliest ship "Huanggu" in China. He was praised three times and was highly valued by the Westernization School. His life was closely related to the Westernization Movement and he became one of the representative scientists in this period.
