Department of Statistics of Nankai University was established in 1999, and its major is statistics. Its predecessor is the department of probability and information statistics, the major of mathematical statistics and related disciplines. The mathematical statistics major of Nankai University was founded in 198 1, and started to recruit undergraduates, master students and doctoral students in 1983, 1984 and 1990 respectively. It has become one of the earliest schools in China to offer this major and recruit all kinds of students, and it is also one of the five key disciplines of probability theory and mathematical statistics in China. Over the past two decades, hundreds of statistical talents have been trained (more than 600 bachelors, more than 50 masters, and more than 0 doctors). He has been employed or further studied in the National Bureau of Statistics, provincial and municipal statistical bureaus, national universities, scientific research, enterprises and institutions, and played an important role in the national economy, education, scientific research and various undertakings. The discipline of probability and statistics in Nankai University is a national key discipline.

Statistics is a modern science that studies how to collect, analyze, manage and infer data. Its application covers almost all scientific fields, including natural science, social science, humanities, industrial and agricultural production, military science, finance, medicine, biology, quality management, meteorology, market research, actuarial science, enterprise management and decision-making. In particular, statistics have played a great role in finance, finance, biology, medicine, pharmacy, commerce, product quality design and improvement.

The training goal of this major is to train students to have a solid mathematical foundation, master the basic theories and methods of mathematical statistics, skillfully use computers and have basic knowledge of economics, so that they not only have a certain quality of statistical theory research, but also have the ability to solve statistical problems in various practical fields such as society, economy and production by using mathematical statistics methods and computer technology, and become specialized talents engaged in mathematical statistics theory and practice. The goal of postgraduate education is to train senior professionals in statistical theory and application.

The cultivation method of undergraduates is to lay a solid theoretical foundation of mathematics and statistics and master various basic mathematical statistics methods through classroom teaching and training. While learning mathematics, statistical basics and specialized courses well, we should especially strengthen the teaching and guidance of computer courses, give students a lot of computer operation training, and skillfully program and use tool software, statistical software and management software. Through the special teaching and project practice of economics, marketing, management, insurance and other majors, we can cultivate students' ability to integrate theory with practice, increase their various talents and give full play to their creativity. The way to cultivate graduate students is to cultivate research-oriented talents through theoretical and practical research topics outside classroom teaching, master the frontier of at least one subject direction, and achieve creative results.

Undergraduate students of this major have mathematical analysis, advanced algebra, probability theory and stochastic process as their basic courses, real variable function, ordinary differential equation and operational research as their elective courses, mathematical statistics as their courses, sampling techniques, regression analysis, multivariate analysis, time series, statistical calculation, experimental design and nonparametric statistics, and economics as their courses. Computer courses include computer basics and C language, Fortran language, operating system and network, database, statistical software package, mathematical software and so on. Most mathematical statistics courses are equipped with computer exercises. For graduate students, there are advanced specialized courses and courses with different research directions, research seminars in frontier fields, and organized research projects to carry out research activities.

Graduates' career orientation is to engage in investigation and design, statistical analysis and prediction, management, information processing, computer software, product design and improvement in enterprises and institutions such as statistics, finance, biology, medicine, industry, agriculture, etc. They can also engage in teaching, scientific research, statistical analysis, decision-making and computer management in universities and scientific research departments, or pursue advanced studies in statistics and other disciplines (such as economics).

This major has an experienced faculty, and employs well-known statisticians at home and abroad as part-time professors, which can train professionals at all levels (undergraduates, master students and doctoral students) and accept postdoctoral staff and visiting scholars. Nankai University Applied Statistics and Information Research and Development Center, which focuses on applied statistics research, also plays an important role in the department.
