In a small town in central Florida, a seven-year-old girl Mary lives with her uncle Frank and a cat named Fred. Frank is a ship repairman, and sometimes he takes some strange jobs. Mary is surrounded by many positive adult models who have given her a lot of help, including Frank's neighbor Roberta and her teacher Bonnie.
In the film, not only Mary is a math genius, but also her mother Diane. As geniuses, Mary and Diane have different fates.
Diane's mother, Evelyn, is very talented in math, but she had to give up because she got married. Later, the unfortunate marriage made her place great hopes on her daughter Diane, who was also gifted in mathematics, and devoted all her energy to cultivating her daughter Diane. Diane devoted her life to proving the mathematical equation "Navistokes equation". If it is solved successfully, she may win the Fields Prize and share the Nobel Prize. With such a strong vision, Diane never participated in social activities and was forced to break up with her first love. Later, Diane met her second boyfriend. The man left Diane after learning that she was pregnant. Diane still gave birth to a child, but because of her own experience, she lost hope in life and cut her wrist to commit suicide. Before committing suicide, she entrusted her brother Frank to take care of her newborn daughter Mary. Evelyn was very angry when she learned that her daughter had committed suicide because she didn't prove the Navistokes equation.
Frank also received a strict education from childhood and became a professor in a famous university when he grew up, but Frank didn't have the talent of his sister, so he was exempted from the strict education of his mother Evelyn. After his sister died, he began to reflect on all this. In order to prevent Mary from making the same mistake again, he quit his job as a professor and took Mary to a small town in Florida. Frank sent Mary to the local kindergarten, hoping that Mary would have a happy childhood. At this time, Mary's mathematical talent was displayed, and her unwilling grandmother found them. Evelyn thinks that Mary belongs to a special school more suitable for adults, and wants to take Mary away and make her as good as her mother, which is inspired by the contradiction of the story. But Frank wants Mary to have a more regular childhood-he believes it is a respect for her sister-which is Mary's mother's last wish. This argument triggered a lawsuit about Mary's future custody.
After several lawsuits, neither Frank nor Evelyn got custody of Mary, and Mary was finally sent to a foster home. Mary was so sad that she was forced to live in a foster home. Later, Frank went to see Mary, but the couple in the foster family refused to say that Mary didn't want to see him. Soon after, Miss Bonnie saw Fred's abandonment message in the supermarket and sent it to Frank. Frank then realized that the foster family was just a front, and they colluded with Evelyn to win custody of Mary.
Frank immediately went to the pet adoption center to bring Fred back, and then rushed to the foster home to find Evelyn to tutor Mary. Frank threw Evelyn a box of materials, which was Diane's legacy. Evelyn knew that "Navistokes Equation" had been proved by her daughter long ago, but Diane demanded that it be published after her death. Evelyn refused to believe it because Diane didn't publish any information about the equation. Frank pointed out that Diane's death was not her death.
Frank finally let Evelyn choose whether to publish this equation. Evelyn looked at the tears on the calculus paper and chose to publish the equation. And Mary continues to live with her uncle.
This is the end of the story. This makes people think.
