Fields Prize (full name: International Prize for Outstanding Discovery in Mathematics) is an award presented at the International Mathematicians Congress of the International Mathematical Union. It awards prizes to two or four young mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions every four years. The champion must be under 40 years old before New Year's Day of that year. The Fields Prize is based on the Canadian mathematician John? Charles. Fields' request is regarded as the Nobel Prize in mathematics (there is no mathematics prize in the Nobel Prize). As for why perelman refused to accept the prize, it may not matter, but it reminds me of a quip made by Woody Allen.
He has won about four Oscar awards and more than 20 film nominations, but he has only been to the award ceremony once (or because of the mourning activities of 9 1 1 terrorist attacks). When talking about why he refused to receive the golden statuette, he said:
Awards are the stupidest thing. I can't stand people's comments on me. If they say you deserve this prize, you accept it, so the next time they say you don't, you have to accept it.
