Xiangtan University is a national key research and teaching university with a high starting point. 1974 the State Council was identified as a comprehensive university of arts, science and engineering, and 1978 was approved by the State Council to become one of the first batch of national key comprehensive universities. It is the first batch of universities in China that have the right to award master's degrees, the first batch of universities in China that have signed contracts with the military to train national defense students, and the first batch of universities in Hunan Province that recruit foreign students. It has always been an established key university.

Xiangtan University is a university founded by President Mao Zedong himself, and named and commissioned by him. It is one of the four national key universities (National University of Defense Technology, Central South University, Hunan University and Xiangtan University) in Hunan Province, the only one supported by the Ministry of Education, and the one built by the State Bureau of Defense Science, Technology and Industry.
