Personally, I think "Mathematics" is more important in general education.
When we were young, we studied mathematics, starting with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Simple oral calculation and complicated written calculation can get higher scores than others and do it faster. In the work after graduation, no matter how fast the computing power is, the solution of the problem still needs the support of a powerful logic system.
Especially for science and engineering majors, tutors like to recruit students with strong mathematical ability, because without good logical analysis ability, it is difficult to make further breakthroughs, whether in scientific research or project analysis. I majored in communication engineering. I studied advanced mathematics, linear algebra, probability theory and mathematical statistics in college, but I really thought it was useless at that time, so I should take the exam. But in the postgraduate stage, I suddenly found that there is a deeper level of postgraduate mathematics: matrix theory, stochastic process. Therefore, mathematics is really the mother of science. With the development of science and technology today, it is difficult to move without a mathematical foundation.
Of course, I still want to emphasize that learning mathematics brings us subtle logical analysis ability. A few years ago, it was divided into arts and sciences. Most students choose to study science. Actually, I still think studying science is the right choice. First, mathematics accounts for a large part, and the requirements are relatively high. So we need to spend energy to calculate, deduce, analyze the ins and outs of math problems, and finally solve them.
In society, we will inevitably encounter many thorny problems. At this time, we think rationally about how to deal with it, analyze it step by step, and finally come up with a train of thought. This is exactly what we do when we study mathematics. We first understand the meaning of the problem, then use what we have learned to reason and sort out the whole logic, so that the problem can be solved. This is true for solving math problems, and sometimes it is true for solving social problems.
Maybe we didn't think mathematics was so important before, maybe many liberal arts students didn't think those science students were better than themselves, but the thinking of mathematics from conditions to conclusions is the most precious in our time.
If I want to test a person's intelligence, I choose to examine his mathematics.
