GRE is an entrance examination for graduate students, which is suitable for graduate students in various disciplines and majors except law (LSAT) and business (GMAT). There are two kinds of GRE exams. One is the GRE general exam, which is taken by most students in China. The other is GRE. There are not many candidates from China who take the GRE special exam, because most American universities do not require GRE special scores, but only ordinary GRE scores. However, applicants who apply for a postgraduate major that is inconsistent with the applicant's undergraduate major need to provide special GRE scores. For example, Mr. A has obtained a bachelor's degree in physics from a domestic university, and wants to go to the United States to study for a master's degree in economics. He needs to provide the GRE test results in economics. If he wants to study for a master's degree in biochemistry, he needs to provide GRE biochemistry scores. If the undergraduate major is the same as the postgraduate major, there is generally no need to provide special grades. Some famous American universities regard GRE scores as "recommended scores": I hope that applicants can provide this score, regardless of whether their undergraduate majors are the same as their own graduate majors, but this is not a necessary condition. At this time, if you can provide special GRE scores, it is very beneficial to apply for scholarships. Therefore, if the applicant has enough time, he might as well take a special exam. An excellent GRE score can reflect the applicant's professional quality and learning potential. GRE unified examination is a necessary examination for applying for postgraduate entrance examination. For graduate students applying for law or business, LSAT or GMAT is used to replace the GRE general exam. Now American universities don't have as high a demand for the sense of substitution of grades as before. Many schools can provide any scores of GRE or GMAT as the scores that business graduate students should provide, and law graduate students also use GRE scores instead of LSAT scores.
The GRE exam lasts for three hours and consists of six parts, all of which are multiple-choice questions, and the method of deducting points for wrong answers is not implemented. The content of the six-part exam consists of two parts, namely, the language item (spoken English), two parts, the mathematics item (quantitative) and two parts, namely, the analysis item (analysis), with full marks of 800 for each item and 2400 for three items.
Chinese item time 1 hour, including four questions: ① completing sentences; ② analogy; ③ Reading comprehension; 4 antonyms; Among them, complete sentences, analogy and antonyms are all understanding of vocabulary; Reading comprehension is the examinee's understanding of the logical structure and theme of the article; Articles can cover any scientific field, but most of them are about biochemistry, astronomy, literature, geography and history. The Chinese item is mainly to test the breadth and depth of vocabulary understanding of candidates, so China students scored very low in this respect, but it did not have a great impact on applying for scholarships, because ETS clearly explained the GRE score: "GRE is aimed at candidates whose mother tongue is English, and candidates whose mother tongue is not English will be affected, because their vocabulary is not as good as that of candidates whose mother tongue is English. When reviewing applicants' GRE scores, we should take the auditor's experience as the standard, and should not adopt uniform and strict minimum admission standards. There is also a TOEFL that tests English language ability. " Math hour includes three types of questions: ① comparison of numbers; ② Separation of numbers; (3) illustrations, involving basic problems of arithmetic, algebra and geometry. These questions are only used in senior one in China, and the questions are relatively easy. Therefore, most candidates in China can get high marks in mathematics, and quite a few of them got full marks of 800. It takes one hour to analyze the project, including two kinds: ① analytical reasoning and ② logical reasoning. GRE professional examinations are divided into mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, history, music, French, Spanish, computer, economics, engineering, education, geology, American literature, political science, psychology and sociology. The number and form of test questions in each subject are different, and its main purpose is to test the knowledge, skills and abilities of candidates in a certain subject or professional field. (Please refer to Professional GRE (1) (2) for the specific classification of GRE professional examinations. ) on this website.
The scoring methods of GRE general ability test and professional test are different.
The scoring method of general ability test is as follows: first, record the number of correct answers in each part to get the original score, that is, give one point for answering a question correctly and add it, then convert the original score into scale score according to the score conversion table of GRE general ability test, and then add the ratios of various departments in stages to get the total score.
The GRE general ability test has a full score of 2400, and all parts (language ability, mathematical ability and analytical ability) have a full score of 800. The minimum score for each part is 200 points, that is, candidates can get 200 points if they don't answer one question or all the answers are wrong.
Most graduate schools in the United States require applicants to score 65,438+065,438+000 ~ 65,438+0200 (65,438+065,438+000 ~ 65,438+0200) in the general proficiency test. Most graduate schools only need candidates to provide these two.
There are no uniform rules and standards for the conversion of scores in GRE professional examinations, because the professional scope and the number of test questions in each subject are different. The full score of each subject in the professional examination is 990, but eight subjects, such as biology, engineering, French, geology, history, music, psychology and Spanish, also give their own small scores in different fields of these subjects, in order to help the school better understand the applicant's ability in a certain subject field.
From the content of the test, we can easily see that GRE is no longer an English proficiency test like TOEFL, but more like an academic quality test, and the difficulty can be imagined. You can know how many subjects are involved in this exam by reciting GRE vocabulary. But don't worry, since someone can get high marks, why can't we?
Grading method of GRE test
The score calculation process of GRE unified examination is basically divided into two steps:
(1) Calculate vocabulary and quantity, and analyze the basic points of each part. The basic score of each part of the GRE general exam is equal to the number of correct answers selected in that part.
(2) According to the GRE general test score conversion table listed below (see Table 3.3), convert the basic scores of each part into standard scores, and then add up the standard scores of the three parts respectively, which is the GRE general test score.
For example, if a candidate answers 42 questions correctly in the vocabulary section, 57 questions correctly in the quantity section and 45 questions correctly in the analysis section. Then, the standard scores of each part are 460, 800 and 790 respectively, and his GRE total score is 2050.
The scoring method of GRE professional examination is roughly the same as that of ordinary examination, but the difference is:
(1) The basic score of GRE professional examination is equal to the number of correct answers minus one quarter of the number of wrong answers.
(2) GRE tests of different majors have different conversion tables.
