I'm not good at math. Can I study actuarial science?
It's more difficult because actuarial science is based on mathematics. My math department is actuarial. In fact, if you want to take an actuary exam, you may wish to pay attention to the examination syllabus in North America. Most of the above mathematics is about probability and statistics. If you are not a math major, many courses in the university are not compulsory. Of course you can teach yourself. But people majoring in mathematics have a solid foundation in mathematics. The understanding depth and angle of these subjects are completely different. For example, the course of probability theory is basically not attended by people who study pure liberal arts. But the difficulty is completely different from that of the specialized courses in the department of mathematics. People who study mathematics will understand it from the perspectives of measurement, space and algebra. These contents are basically not involved by non-mathematics majors. When dealing with some simple problems, this gap is not obvious. But if we need to deal with some flexible and more difficult problems, people with poor mathematical foundation can't do it. In actuarial science, the central limit theorem and the law of large numbers in probability theory are the most basic and commonly used. But without the basic knowledge of measure theory, point set topology and real variable function, it is impossible to understand its essence. At most, it can only be outlined, not deepened. At the same time, actuarial science also involves time series, multivariate statistics and so on. These people who are not math majors will basically have no chance and no level to take the exam. However, LZ should also know that learning mathematics is a bitter process. Now you seem to be an actuary with a wonderful career, but you still have to go through many tests to reach that height. Actuarial exams also require papers to be published, which undoubtedly requires your creativity. How can an actuary who is based on mathematics write a level article if mathematics is not good? Actuarial science is just an applied branch of mathematics. If you choose mathematics as your major, there are many things that actuarial science can't use, but who can predict what a subject will need in the future? And a solid mathematical foundation is of great help to your thinking ability and problem-solving ability.
