Shanghai Yan 'an Middle School was founded in June 1946, formerly known as Shanghai Zhenru Middle School. After the founding of New China, it moved to Yan 'an West Road and became more famous. 1960 was designated as the city's key middle school. 1979, the name of the school was written by Comrade Deng Xiaoping. 1998, the school moved to its present address. In 2005, it became the first batch of experimental demonstration high schools in Shanghai.
