I can't find the history of mathematics either, but according to my understanding, the cross product is called the outer product because the cross product of two vectors is perpendicular to the plane defined by the original two vectors (there is no * * * line), which means that the cross product is "outside" of the plane, so it is called the outer product, and the corresponding quantitative product is called the inner product.
