General situation of the Department of Mathematical Sciences in Tsinghua University
Mathematics in Tsinghua has experienced a special development period from 1952 to 1979. During the period of 1952, the national universities were adjusted, and the Department of Mathematics of Tsinghua University was merged into the Department of Mathematics of Peking University and other institutions. Due to the need of engineering education, Tsinghua University has set up a teaching and research section of advanced mathematics, which is mainly responsible for the teaching tasks of basic mathematics courses in the whole school. At that time, only Zhao Fangxiong was left as a professor. 1958, the first computational mathematics major in China was established. By 1966, the total number of teaching and research staff in the two teaching and research groups of advanced mathematics and computational mathematics reached 1 17, with professors including Zhao Weixiong, Bi Rushu and Zhou Huazhang. In the 1960s, the research work of Zhao Fangxiong and other comrades in computational mathematics also had a certain influence in China. During this period, good basic mathematics teaching has also played a great role in training outstanding scientific and technological talents in Tsinghua University.

65438-0979, the Department of Mathematics of Tsinghua University was rebuilt and renamed as the Department of Applied Mathematics, with Zhao Fangxiong as the head of the department. Since then, mathematics in Tsinghua has ushered in a new period of development. At that time, the department of applied mathematics had five teaching and research sections: computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, differential equation, probability statistics and mathematical analysis. 1986 added the teaching and research section of operational research. 198 1 year, the department of applied mathematics in Tsinghua University has just been rebuilt for two years, and she obtained a doctorate in computational mathematics with her characteristics and strength. 1984 received a doctorate in applied mathematics. After entering the 1980s, the mathematics research work of the Department of Applied Mathematics in Tsinghua University started in an all-round way. There are about 30 scientific research projects every year. During the period of 10, more than 400 papers were published in academic journals at home and abroad, and many research achievements won awards. More than 10 teachers have served as the chairman, vice-chairman and director of the first-class society in China, among which Xiao Shutie served as the first chairman of the China Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. In the application of differential equations, the research group headed by Xiao Shutie is in a leading position at home and abroad, and many research achievements have won national and provincial awards. In the research of computational mathematics, important achievements have been made in finite element method, numerical algebra, numerical solution of nonlinear equations, scientific calculation software and parallel algorithm, and many research achievements have won scientific and technological progress awards from the state and ministries, which are at the leading level in China. In operational research, many outstanding achievements have been made in the planning and research of urban transportation integrated system, and won the national and Beijing science and technology progress awards.

At the end of 1990s, the Department of Mathematics ushered in new development opportunities. 1999 was renamed the department of mathematics to better reflect the coverage of the department of mathematics in teaching and research. In recent years, the school has increased its investment in the development of mathematics, greatly improved the hardware environment such as office, teaching and scientific research, and created a strong academic atmosphere with a good incentive mechanism. The introduction of talents from various disciplines at home and abroad has also injected new vitality into the development of mathematics in Tsinghua. At present, the Department of Mathematics has formed a strong and well-structured faculty. The faculty is 8 1 person, including 37 full professors (including doctoral supervisors 18), 35 associate professors, 7 lecturers and 2 teaching assistants. Among the teachers, 46 are under 45 years old (including full professor 13, associate professor 24, lecturer and teaching assistant 9), and 43 have doctoral degrees. 13 all young professors are engaged in research work in famous foreign universities and research institutes. Among them, 4 won the National Outstanding Young Scholars Fund, 2 won the Outstanding Young Scholars Award from Hongkong Qiushi Fund, 4 won the Tsinghua University Hundred Talents Program Fund, and 1 won the Cross-century Talents Fund from the Ministry of Education. The whole department has full members 14 (including 2 sub-project leaders) of the national "973" major basic research project. In addition, Tsinghua Mathematics Department is also the national mathematics teaching base of basic engineering courses. In recent years, our department has hired internationally renowned mathematicians, including Professor Lin Jiaqiao from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Professor Qiu Chengtong from Harvard University and Professor Chen Shengshen from the University of California, Berkeley, as honorary professors. Professor Li from Michigan State University and Professor Wang Shiquan from City University of Hong Kong were invited as visiting professors. Academician Peking University, Academician of Graduate School of China Academy of Sciences, Academician Wan Zhexian of Institute of Mathematics and System Science of China Academy of Sciences, researcher and Han were employed as part-time professors.

After several generations of continuous efforts, Tsinghua Mathematics Department has become one of the most powerful mathematics departments in China. After receiving a doctorate in computational mathematics from 198 1, a doctorate in applied mathematics from 1984 and a doctorate in basic mathematics from 1998, he was awarded a first-class doctorate in mathematics in 2000. In terms of scientific research, in the past five years, the whole department has won more than national and provincial awards 10, including the first prize 1 for scientific and technological progress of the Ministry of Education and three second prizes. In addition, he has also made remarkable achievements in the compilation of engineering mathematics textbooks, the research of teaching methods and the modernization of teaching means, and won three national excellent teaching achievement awards. 2 1 textbook has been published in recent years. In 2000, he undertook 95 scientific research projects, including 62 projects from various departments of China and the State Council. From 65438 to 0999, 48 papers published by the Department of Mathematics of Tsinghua University were included in SCI, and the total number was among the best in the Department of Mathematics of universities in China. Great progress has also been made in personnel training. In the past five years, 20 doctors and 72 masters have been awarded. In 2000, the number of undergraduates also increased significantly, from 30 to 90 per year, which is undoubtedly the basis for the further development of mathematics in Tsinghua.
