Eric Temple Bell 1883 was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. I studied in England in my early years. 65438-0902, went to the United States and studied at Stanford University. 1904, he got a bachelor's degree in literature. 1908 studied as a graduate student at the university of Washington, teaching part-time, and 1909 obtained a master's degree in literature from the university. 19 1 1 entered Columbia university, and 19 12 received a doctorate in philosophy. After that, he returned to Washington University as a math lecturer and 192 1 became a professor. 1924 ~ 1928 taught at the university of Chicago in the summer, 1926 taught at Harvard university in the first half of the year, and was later employed as a professor of mathematics at California Institute of Technology.
Bell is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He is the chairman of the American Mathematical Association, the vice-chairmen of the American Mathematical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Mathematical Association, the Journal of American Mathematics and the Journal of Philosophy of Science. He was awarded the Bosch Prize by the American Mathematical Society. In addition to this book, his works include Purple Sapphire (1924), Algebraic Arithmetic (1927), Revealing the Mysteries of Science, The Queen of Science (193 1) and Numerology.
Bell died in 1960 and 65438+February, before the publication of his last book, The Last Question.
