Introduction to the University of North Carolina:
The University of North Carolina was chartered in the North Carolina Legislative Council on1789 65438+February 1 1. Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill was named in memory of Benjamin Franklin in 1793, and is regarded as the northern boundary of UNC main campus.
When the university was founded, there was only one building called Old East. Today it is still used as a residential building. It is the oldest public university building in America. It was laid on 1793 65438+ 10/2, near an Anglican church, hence the name Chapel Hill.
Today, universities celebrate their anniversary on June 10 and June 12 every year. Hinton James, the first student of UNC, walked here from Wilmington on February 1795. A large residential building on campus is named after him. The University of North Carolina is the first public university to offer classes and recruit graduate students.
The University of Georgia was first chartered by 1785, but classes did not begin until 180 1. Some private schools were established before the University of North Carolina, but they didn't become public educational institutions until much later. The University of North Carolina is the only American university institution that confers degrees in the18th century.
1932 UNC became one of the three original campuses of the reorganized University of North Carolina (1972 later called the University of North Carolina system). 1963, the reorganized university has realized complete coeducation. Therefore, the University of North Carolina Women's College was renamed the University of North Carolina at Green Sboro, and the University of North Carolina itself became the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In the undergraduate department, students complete the requirements of visual courses in the first two years at the University of North Carolina. English, social science, history, foreign languages, mathematics and natural science are compulsory courses for all students to ensure that students receive a wide range of art and science education.
After the second year, students enter the college of arts and sciences, or choose other degree courses such as medical college, business, pharmacy, information and library science, public health or journalism and mass communication.
