Just finished the application. Let me answer your question roughly. . .
A. School problems
Personally, I think the power direction is mainly divided into power system direction and power electronics direction. The former is the study of power system and power system automation, which is macroscopic; The latter is the research of power electronics, which is biased towards equipment. Of course, it refers not only to power system equipment, but also to various DC/DC and AC/DC inverters, which are widely used. Personally, in the United States, the latter is easier to find a job than the former, because the latter is far more widely used than the former, but I think the latter can just study for a master's degree and is very practical. It is worth mentioning that the Z-source inverter theory, a hot research topic in power electronics, was invented by FIEEE, an alumnus of Wuhan University and MSU. I graduated from Wuhan University and worked as a doctor in Japan (when I was a doctor, I only took three days off every year! )。 I applied for two directions. There are many power systems, and I mainly apply for the direction of power quality. Of course, both involve power quality. Power system emphasizes the theoretical analysis of power quality, focusing on harmonic analysis and transient power quality analysis; Power electronics tend to control power quality, such as designing APF to reduce harmonic content. The specific school situation is as follows:
Austin 1.U Texas
With the geographical location of UTexas energy town, the power direction of Utex should be one of the best. Of course, in the ece of utexas, this direction is called the energy system. In terms of teachers, there are Daniel Willam Grady (Faye) and Edwards Bowles (Faye). Their names often appear in various IEEE power standards. Erniu mainly studies power quality, especially harmonics. At the same time, Bowles also likes to use various digital signal processing methods to analyze various important nonlinear phenomena. It was his student Shin Yong-June who, under his guidance, put forward a new index to measure the power quality of power system under transient conditions. I believe that other schools in Texas are also good at electricity or energy, such as TAMU. In a word, I think it is right to study electricity in Texas.
2. Virginia Tech
After watching Die Hard Rowen Rowen, you will find that Bruce Willis and justin long went to the state prison in Virginia. The University of Virginia has no direction of power. According to the logic of analyzing Utexas above, the dynamic direction of Virginia Tech is good. Indeed, many professors in the direction of power graduated from this school. At present, there are eight teachers in this school, and head is in this direction. Basically, it is a power system, and there is no power electronics. Liu Jiaoshou studies power quality. He is an undergraduate of Xi Jiao Tong University, and received his doctorate in OSU. I lied to him a long time ago, but he told me to have someone who knows the database, and I didn't understand it either, so he recommended two big cows in this field, Asu and U of Alberta. Another teacher I hired was assistant P Centeno, who made measurements in the power system. He accepted a doctor who just graduated from WHU Electric. I read it in an article he just published. I was very interested in what he did and had a certain background, so he replied to me politely. However, tell me that there is no rice at present, and contact me when you have my project.
3.AmericanStudentUnion
Liu Jiaoshou told me that the teacher I contacted at Arizona State University was Professor G.T.Heydt Comrades who study harmony must be familiar with this name. He first proposed an improved FFT for harmonic analysis, and also pointed out the shortcomings of current power quality measurement indicators. Of course, there must be other contributions to the power system. Due to the limitation of major and research scope, I'm not sure. Under the signboard of VT's Liu Jiaoshou, I tried to trap this Daniel and got the reply that he stopped enrolling students. I am satisfied with a reply. The power direction of ASU is called power and energy system. I don't know what geographical advantages ASU has, but his family has a power system engineering research center. Other States also have the best teachers in power system, such as AR and TX. Of course, mainly in AR and TX. Here is a tip. There is a brief introduction of researchers on the homepage of the center, which contains information of all researchers in the center, which provides great convenience for students applying for power to find professors. Among the schools I have seen, only ASU has such a center. In addition, the research direction of ASU under the power direction is relatively complete, mainly including power electronics, high voltage, power system analysis, power generation and power quality. ASU is worth a try for the flying friends who want to apply for motivation.
4. Ohio State University
In fact, I don't understand the strength of this school. The power direction of this school is called energy-power. At present, there are four in-service professors and one retired professor, and there are two laboratories, electromechanical system and high voltage laboratory. Personally, I think the scale is relatively small. Of course, there is also a professor who graduated from, Professor Wang. Anyone who is committed to power electronics can contact him. A responsible teacher.
5.Iastate U
The direction of electricity in this school is called power and energy system, with one teacher and five teachers. This paper mainly studies the operation of power system, especially the power grid. Professor Ajjarapu, the chairman of their group, made full use of the opportunity of blackout in North America to study the aging problem of power grid, which received strong support and attention. I was also rated as an IEEE member last year. This group is indeed a positive force and our direction. Comrades who want to learn power electronics, it is best not to come to this place, just one teacher to do this, Dr. Aliprantis.
6. University of Central Florida
If you want to engage in power electronics, this place is good. There is a power electronics research center here, Florida power electronics CNET, and its director is also the director of UCF EECS. We need ceramics here, and the background should match. I sent a letter to this person in charge, asking if I want to enroll students. He replied, please send me your resume. There used to be a HUST power electronics guy who got a scholarship here for four years.
7. University of Washington State.
The power direction of this school is called energy and power system, and the teachers are all full professors. There are four on the page at present. In fact, one of them, Kevin Tomasovic, has gone to UTK EECS to be the head of the department. This department studies power systems, and there is no power electronics. Teachers are all teachers who have more status in the school. The other three, one of whom is the Dean of Engineering College from EECS, and the other is distinguished professor from Boeing Company. Their department should still recruit teachers, otherwise it is estimated that it will become like the University of Washington, and the whole direction will withdraw from the ECE stage.
I also chose WPI, UMC and UTK. At present, WPI has only two professors working in power systems, both of whom are FIEEE, but from the photos and resumes, even if they don't retire, they should retire in recent years. Didn't find a successor, don't, ready to waste? Although UMC wrote power on its own website, it is not systematic and its natural level is not very high. On UTK's side, the dean is in charge of power. He graduated from Washington State University in January this year. As mentioned above, he is in charge of the power system. In addition, there is a teacher from China who is in charge of power electronics. The number of teachers is relatively small.
8. university of alberta
Alberta is a big energy province in California, with a lot of oil, but electricity, I don't know. It was Liu Jiaoshou from VT who asked me to ask Professor Xu if he wanted students here, so I came, otherwise I don't know. Mainly because, at first, I didn't expect to go to CA, and then, the TOEFL score could not meet the requirements of ordinary CA schools. In the ECE of U of A, there is a direction of power engineering and power electronics, with 5 teachers and 2 apprentices (5 in the whole department). But the link of Don Koval is gone. I don't know whether I retired or went to another school. Professor Xu is an expert in the field of power quality and distributed power generation. Then, I read some books about power quality in China and introduced the level of Professor Xu of A in this respect. Therefore, I think the strength of this school should be better.
Other schools:
9.UMR: Their website says that their graduate program in electronic engineering was rated as the top ten in the United States by IEEE in the mid-1990s. There are four teachers, two professors, an assistant P and an assistant P in the power of EE in this school. It is said that this school is very small and few people are recruited. However, their electric power website says that there are 15-20 graduate students in their direction every year, of whom 25% are doctoral students. I had a serious conversation with my teacher here and didn't reply. . . . By the way, this school has been renamed Missouri University of Science and Technology.
10. auburn
When writing an article, I saw this school from the PES paper template. The school has four teachers in the direction of the dynamic system of early childhood education. Retired teacher 1 teacher (1 doctor in 969) There are currently 3 teachers, including 2 professors and P associate professor 1 teacher, mainly engaged in power system, and only1teacher also studies power electronics. It is not clear what the characteristics of their research are.
Florida State University
I brought this school when I searched for "power quality" in EI. Because, in recent years, too many articles come from FSU. Then, I found that they had an Advanced Power System Center (CAPS) and did some research on power. However, their power system is not an ordinary power system, but focuses on the transportation system. There is a lot of research on ships. Recently, IEEE TRANS. POWER SYSTEMS has just published an article about the application of improved HHT in power quality analysis. ECE in this school also has a power electronics teacher, and an alumnus of HUST works there as a teacher. It is said that this school is famous for superconductivity.
University of South Carolina
Similarly, in 2008, EE could not find this school on US NEWS top 100. Power is the ECE of this school, which belongs to the direction of energy and control system. There are two groups in this direction, one is a virtual test bed, and the other is a power and joint system. VTB is a project with its own characteristics, and ms also serves the navy, which I don't quite understand. The latter group belongs to power electronics and power supply. Professor Grady mentioned above is a student in Willam. He has just graduated and has lost an electric power IT laboratory. Korean, Ph.D. studies power quality. Students should be recruited. The two groups of teachers are exactly the same, ***6, which should still be relatively large. One professor, two associate professors and three associate professors.
Basically, I didn't apply to the top 30 schools, so I looked at the ece in the top 30 before writing and added my opinion:
Gatch
Only then did I find that the strength of this school is strong! In Gatech, the power direction belongs to the power technology interest group. A ***7 teachers, a P assistant, and the president of IEEE Power Electronics Society, all other professors live in their homes. There are many researchers at Westinghouse Electric and IEEE. Personally, I think its research is biased towards power electronics. Niu ren is worth a try.
Purdue University
Engineering major generally refers to this school. The motivation of this school belongs to the field of energy and systems. There are five teachers, all of whom are professors. Most of them graduated from Purdue University. Some of them got their doctorates in the 1960s and 1970s. The electricity in this school is biased towards power electronics. In the field of power, there are also many great men who graduated from here.
Uwisc
In his family's power engineering, it is divided into machine, power electronics and power system. It's clearly divided. A ***9 teacher, from the teacher's research, I think it is biased towards control, whether it is power electronics or power system.
Professor: There is a laboratory, a laboratory for power system and control, and a professor, who is very small.
RPI: I have the impression that there are about three teachers who do power electronics, and none of them do power system. One of them is China, a teacher of China Southern Airlines.
NCSU: One direction is power electronics and power system, which is very biased towards power electronics and materials and control. There are six teachers. One P, one P, and the rest are professors.
This is the only powerful school in the top 30. Links to several original power laboratories have been deleted from UW's website.
From the teachers of various schools, there are many Prof, but few assistant P and Assitant P, especially those who specialize in focusing system. This seems a bit unexpected, and soon, it will be difficult for anyone to take over these groups. Then in terms of scale, the direction of power should be relatively small.
B. Does changing majors mean taking GRE, a subject in GRE? Is it difficult to take?
I don't need to take a submarine. I studied electrical machinery, power system automation, and the field is the same. I don't even have to take a substitute class when I transfer physics.
Turn to math, biology, etc. Go to take the exam.
SUB is equivalent to the difficulty of the college exam, which is English.
C. Is learning weak electricity a "major change"? What kind of electrical specialty is not a major change (the concept in this respect is very unclear)?
As long as you learn from strong electricity to weak electricity, it is not a big change, weak electricity to strong electricity is a big change, and strong electricity to telecommunications is a big change.
Don't worry, in fact, if you are a cooperative school of Huadian or TEPCO with State Grid, the EEE of foreign universities will accept you.
Come on, wish you success.
