Qiu Chengtong and Steve Nardiz wrote Harvard Department of Mathematics 150, arguing that Harvard Department of Mathematics used to be a third-rate department, but it has grown into a world-class leadership center.
At present, the scale of the mathematics department of Harvard is still very small, with only 18 senior faculty members, but it is as excellent as ever and inherits the tradition of the pioneering department. The leadership of Harvard University is open-minded, willing to try new research directions, and has opened up many new fields: modern topology, dynamical systems, ergodic theory, information theory, nonlinear partial differential equations, complex analysis of geometric viewpoints, algebraic geometric basis based on algebra, group theory, number theory and so on. It covers almost all fields of fundamental importance to mathematics. Secondly, professors and students can put their energy into original research.
