Let's just say that your eigenvalue is wrong. The result I made by the collocation method is (x1-ax3) 2-(x2-2x3) 2+(4-a2) x3 2.
The previous coefficient is already positive and negative, so as long as 4-a 2 >; =0, a is -2, 2.
