1, the competition of mathematics department is the fiercest grade in Nankai Middle School. It may not be the most fierce major, but it must be fierce. For example, the Science Library of the Study Room in Nankai is open at the latest except the dormitory (open to 1 1: 30 every night), with a total of about 220 seats. Those who take GRE exams, those who take part in postgraduate studies and those in the department of mathematics are the most common, and generally stay up until the latest. Most students in the department of mathematics are juniors, and some are freshmen and sophomores, that is to say.
In my class, many scholarship winners are girls. In other words, 70% to 80% of girls may be in the top 50. What is the concept of this matter? If you want to continue your graduate studies after graduation, there are about 30 places in the Department of Mathematics. Those who go abroad for graduate studies are similar to those who go abroad for graduate studies, and there may be fewer. That is, if 80% of the girls in our class go abroad for graduate studies, then there is no need to worry about their way out. Of course, there are some unsatisfactory places, but it should be possible to draw a conclusion that girls will not study math too hard, at least in Nankai.
3. The Department of Mathematics in Nankai is different from other schools: freshmen and sophomores are taught according to the major of "Mathematics", that is, there is only one major, which mainly teaches basic mathematics, among which the basic courses are mathematical analysis, advanced algebra, probability theory, supplemented by complex variable theory, abstract algebra and other courses, in order to lay a good foundation for advanced mathematics. Junior year began to be divided into four majors:
Statistics: It is said that overseas insurance research is very popular, and the specialty is also very useful, and there are many cattle.
Applied mathematics: focusing on the application of finance, I have many students this year. Numbers and statistics are two majors with a large number of people.
Information technology science: focusing on computers
Computational mathematics: more emphasis on algorithms, more specific. There are relatively few people in these two majors.
4. Many people who study mathematics, even those who learn well, may not like mathematics very much, but few people regard mathematics as a lifelong career. Many people have decided to study scientific mathematics because they have the advantage of studying abroad, in order to switch to other majors when they are graduate students. I don't think high school olympiad has anything to do with NTU's math curriculum. The important thing is whether you can spend your college time hard enough to adapt to the more abstract theory and problem-solving style of college mathematics or advanced mathematics. Once you master it, math will be easy to do, but compared with other majors, you still need to spend more time reading and learning by yourself. If you don't adapt in time, it may have an impact on confidence, but the actual impact is not great. Some people in our class failed the basic course in the first year and ranked in the top 20 in the second year. Considering that I just said that the top 50 students may go abroad for postgraduate study, this is quite a good result. So I think non-intelligence factors are more important in learning mathematics than intelligence.
Finally, I hope you have a plan for the future. If you decide to go to the math department, it means that you probably won't be hired after four years. So if you have a plan, you won't waste time, because the time of the math department is more precious.
