Cheshev was born into a noble family, and many of his ancestors served in the army. His father, Lev pavlovic Chebyshev, participated in the Great Patriotic War against Napoleon's invasion. His mother is Agrafina Ivanovna Chebyshev, and Chebyshev is the second child in the family. His brother Vladimir Levovich Chebyshev was a later artillery general and a professor at the Petersburg Artillery Academy.
