How do ordinary doctors find overseas postdocs?
Another year of graduation season, the newly graduated doctor began to prepare for postdoctoral studies. According to my own class, this paper sorts out some experiences on how to find a postdoctoral fellow in biology (bioinformatics).

First of all, it should be clear that postdoctoral is only a transitional stage, and it is a kind of training for doctors who are ready to continue to develop on the research road in the future. As the gap between domestic and international income levels is getting smaller and smaller, overseas postdoctoral work can not only make money, but also publish articles with gold (so the number of people who are willing to go abroad to study for doctoral degrees has dropped significantly). Mainly to get better training and send better articles. Invest in future survival and development (find a teaching post or industry).

Don't feel inferior because you are a doctor in China, and don't worry too much because you haven't published an article. You have youth and potential, but you plan to use the most precious time for future development. The level of domestic scientific research is changing with each passing day, and the gap with developed countries in Europe and America in scientific research strength is getting smaller and smaller (especially the ability to publish articles). Your level is certainly not the lowest, especially after graduating from the top schools in China. When you come to the United States, you often feel that American laboratories are crude, lack of funds and inefficient. The strength and doctoral laboratory are not particularly high, or even low. So if there are good postdoctoral opportunities in China, they can also be considered.

In addition, the longer you stay, the more you will find that there are obvious levels in academia (for example, it is divided into super Daniel, Daniel, Mavericks and new PI, which are introduced below). Generally, the level of your doctoral laboratory and the articles you published basically determine the level of the new boss you are looking for. It's normal to be higher than your current level 1 2. For example, if you publish articles with CNS ratings or sub-publications, you will want to go to a laboratory that regularly publishes CNS and is a leader in this field. And if you don't have an article and your scientific research level is average, it doesn't mean that you can't pursue it. It's a pity that you just go to Daniel's laboratory in a whimsical way. If you can have a correct positioning of yourself, after confirmation, you will find that you are just an ordinary doctor (the boss is not a Daniel and the article is not top-notch). The following tips are for reference only:

If you are a general doctor, you generally need the following websites to find a job after your PhD.

Websites of all disciplines.

/Nature work/science/work

Bioinformatics website:

https://www.biostars.org/t/Jobs/

https://www.bioinformatics.org/jobs/? group _ id = 10 1 & amp; Summary = 1

http://www.txgen.tamu.edu/jobs/

The website of the research institute NIH:

https://www . training . NIH . gov/career _ services/postdoc _ jobs _ NIH

On the other hand, Google search generally goes directly to the lab.

For example: postdoctoral laboratory of cancer bioinformatics or machine learning? Bioinformatics postdoctoral laboratory?

Tips:

In the order of submitting resumes, start with Daniel who matches your interests. You can vote for some new PIs later and have an interview. The advantage is: if you have an offer, you can accumulate experience and increase your confidence. But the disadvantage is that if you don't like the offer you got a long time ago, you will fall into the confusion of choice later.

Super Daniel (Nobel Prize, HHMI, academician) does not advertise (if there are exceptions, you know). The reason is that Daniel's friends have many recommendations, and people who want to be doctoral students are in an endless stream.

Daniel (an associate academician, a prestigious school, and a cow group that often sends CNS) rarely sends advertisements, and some will recruit people on the laboratory website.

Calf (associate professor or above, stable output of laboratory staff) occasionally advertises for new projects or jobs after doctoral graduation, which belongs to normal metabolism.

The new PI will be advertised for the opposite reason. Can I consider a new PI? Yes, but I have to do my homework. Disadvantages: the risk will be greater, the boss will be under great pressure, the article will be slow or suffer losses (the industry is not famous enough). Advantages: There will be more training in details.

You know, every Daniel is from the new PI. If it is a powerful new PI, it is not uncommon for the new PI to quickly become a new scientific research star in this environment in the United States, such as Zhang Feng of MIT. Some bosses published Niu Wen as a correspondent when he was an associate professor, and their doctoral students found PI positions in the United States, which also belonged to a new scientific research star. For example: Wei Li (Baylor Medical College), Han Liang (Doctor of Medicine).

Whether China bosses think about it or not: they need to think about it, do their homework and see the results (post-independence articles and the position of trained bloggers)

If there are American bosses with the same level, generally speaking, white bosses tend to be white bosses, because almost all experienced people think foreign bosses are better, but there are exceptions. Most China bosses are more enterprising. After all, it is stressful for foreigners to stop scripts in the United States, but there are exceptions.

Lab, which often advertises, does not consider it, but carefully considers it.

A: If it is a medium-sized bull/bull, it often advertises. The normal reason is: 1) I have changed companies, and I will leave after I get my doctorate; 2) There are new funds; "You know" reason: 1) The output of the laboratory is not good, and the post cannot be kept; 2) The atmosphere in the laboratory is not good, and Dr. Bo can't stay;

? B: If it is a new PI, there is usually only the start-up capital, which is mostly between1-2 million dollars. Normal new AP will recruit 1-3 doctoral students, and will recruit them within 1-2 years, so as to start working immediately. If there are new funds, we will continue to recruit. If there is no new funds, we will still recruit people every day for the same reason as "you know" in A.

How to do homework:

A: Ask your tutor/friend where there is a suitable laboratory. Many bosses like to invite friends to introduce Hou Bo. Reason: 1) Increase contacts/cooperation opportunities; 2) The general post-doctoral level is not bad; 3) The directions may be more matched; 4) save time;

B: If you really want to go to the lab and no one recommends you. I got an interview by submitting my resume normally. The homework to be done is:

1) Look at the website of the research group, whether you are interested in the research direction, the personnel composition (see what happened after the doctor before, the articles published after joining the group), the style of painting (including laboratory news, whether there are new funds, whether there are new articles published) and so on;

2) google, linkedin, researchgate and grantome search for information about future tutors.

3) If you intend to accept the offer, you'd better contact the people inside the lab or those who have left the lab by email or friends/alumni relationship. If you can get in touch with them, find out what you want to know most, what about the project, the boss and the atmosphere? This is actually very difficult. After all, when a stranger asks you about his boss, he will give a reserved answer. However, once you feel uncomfortable, please be careful. Of course, there may be exceptions. The rule is: if a student/doctor says the boss is good, it is basically good. If 2-3 people say that the boss is not so good, it is definitely not good. ?

After accepting the offer or joining the job, determine the project direction as soon as possible, adapt to the laboratory environment, do more projects and send articles quickly. Bosses are human beings, with advantages and disadvantages. They don't go out to travel and have fun after writing their blogs. Only by complaining less and publishing articles quickly can they have the capital to achieve their goals as soon as possible.

If you find problems, such as unreliable topics and unreliable bosses. Try to adapt to the fruitless situation and leave in time. Take this experience as an experience and reduce the sunk cost as soon as possible.
