The main research directions of mineralogy, petrology and deposit science include the genesis and deposit environmentology of nonferrous and precious metal deposits, concealed granite and metallogenic dynamics, ultrahigh pressure petrology, volcanic rock research, research and development of gem minerals and mineral rock materials.

Research on nonferrous metals and metals (lead, zinc, copper, tungsten, tin, gold, silver, etc.). ) Deposits and concealed granites have inherited the academic thoughts and professional spirit of the older generation of geologists, and gathered new research results, gradually forming a unique overall research direction, and the research field has been continuously extended. For example, the research and development of gem minerals is a branch discipline developed on the basis of mineralogy. 1989, it was the earliest in China to recruit master students and doctoral students in mineral gemstone research (jointly enrolled with Central South University). Since 1995, our school has cooperated with the British Gemmology Association, the British Jewellery Institute (FGA Certificate Authorized Training and Examination Center) and the Craft Production Center of the University of California, USA. It has formed its own advantages and characteristics and enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. For another example, deposit environmentology is an interdisciplinary subject of traditional deposit science and environmental science, which explores the scientific problems of environmental response of mining or disturbing deposits.
