In the old days, there were some folk customs in Tianjin, such as climbing the mountain on Chongyang, enjoying chrysanthemums to save the bucket, and the custom of parents taking their daughters back to their parents' home for a reunion. On the Double Ninth Festival, people invite relatives and friends, bring wine and vegetables, climb high and overlook, and make a loud noise. Tianjin is a coastal plain and there are no mountains around the city. In the past, most people in Tianjin climbed mountains in the Jade Emperor Pavilion in the old city, and some places such as Shuiyue Temple, Wanghai Temple, Wanghai Tower and Drum Tower were also used as places to climb mountains. On the Double Ninth Festival, chrysanthemums are in full bloom, and many chrysanthemums in the Jade Emperor Pavilion are placed in a mountain shape with auspicious words written on them. Autumn is crisp and chrysanthemums are in full bloom, which is a good season to climb high and look far.
Eating cakes on the Double Ninth Festival is exquisite, and "cake" and "height" are homophonic, meaning climbing up step by step. Vendors selling cut cakes and dried cakes should come to the festival at the right time and shout loudly "Yangcun dried cakes, buy dried cakes step by step" and "cut cakes, cut cakes that are rising year by year" to add a festive atmosphere to the festival.
