Bethune, a Canadian, 1890 was born in Ontario, Canada, and graduated from the University of Toronto with a major in medicine. He used to be a thoracic surgeon at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and director of thoracic surgery at Sacred Heart Hospital, and later joined the Canadian Producers' Party.
