What was the first railway in China and when was it built?
This is definitely the Wusong Railway in Shanghai, and the Zhangjing Railway is the first railway built by China people themselves, not the first railway in China.

Wusong railway

Wusong Railway is the first railway in China, but it was illegally built by the imperialists by deception, and was demolished after opening to traffic 16 months.

1866, the British envoy Wade proposed to the Qing government that the waterway between Wusong and Shanghai was blocked, making it difficult to dredge, making it impossible for large-tonnage ships to dock at Shanghai Port, and demanded the construction of a railway from Wusong to Shanghai, so that large-tonnage ships could handle combined transport with Shanghai after docking in Wusong. At this time, the Qing government still had doubts about building the railway and did not approve Wade's request. /kloc-at the beginning of 0/875, Jardine Matheson, a British businessman in Shanghai, played a trick and organized Wusong Road Company, claiming to build a road between Wusong and Shanghai. In fact, it was to lay rails on the completed subgrade, address unknown. The Qing government failed to see through the scam and agreed to buy land. 1876 subgrade was completed at the beginning, and the first trial operation was completed when three quarters of track laying was completed. The local people strongly opposed to harming their vital interests, and Shanghai government officials also negotiated with the British consul to prevent the railway from continuing construction. Jardine Matheson ignored the sun and apparently obeyed the order to stop, but the track-laying project went on as usual. 1 April, 876, Wusong Railway with a total length of 9 miles (about 14.5 km) was completed and officially opened to traffic on July1day. This is a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 0.762m, a rail weight of13kg per meter and a train speed of 24-32km per hour.

However, the train only ran for more than a month and killed a passerby. The repressed discontent of the local people finally broke out, attacking it in droves and stopping the train from running. Unwilling to "suffer", the British side agreed with the Chinese side in June 5438+0876+00 that the Qing government would buy the railway with 285,000 silver, which would be paid in three installments within one and a half years, and allowed to operate as usual before the final payment was paid. After the payment was made on schedule, the Qing government decided to dismantle the line and prepare to build the Taiwan-province railway. Later, due to various reasons, the Taiwan Railway could not be started immediately, and these equipments of Wusong Railway rusted into a pile of scrap iron.

The Wusong Railway BLACKPINK appeared, and the train, a modern means of transportation, finally appeared on the ancient land of China.
