2. Why was Zhenjiang called "Dantu" in ancient times?

Zhenjiang, formerly known as "Yi", is a territory, and later renamed as "Zhu Fang" and "Guyang".

During the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shihuang renamed Zhenjiang "Dantu". According to legend, in the thirty-seventh year of Qin Shihuang (2 10 BC), Qin Shihuang traveled here eastward, accompanied by a curious scholar who was good at watching qi, and said: This place is full of the qi of the son of heaven.

Hearing this, Qin Shihuang was greatly frightened. In order to protect his country from generation to generation, Qin Shihuang hurriedly sent a decree to drive 3,000 prisoners in ochre clothes (prisoners in red) to Jingxian Mountain on a starry night, destroying beautiful trees in the mountain, digging huge pits, cutting mountains and ridges, and cutting off their "Long Mai". Qin Shihuang also took pains to rename it "Dantu", which means the land of prisoners in red.

In fact, the theory of qi should be superstitious and an excuse. Qin Shihuang built tunnels and dug rivers here for military and economic purposes. Building roads and digging rivers not only facilitates its cruising in the east, but also promotes the development of land and water transportation and local economy, and strengthens the political and military control of the central government over the southeast region.
