Also known as: Grandma and Her Ghost (1998)
Original name: May Ruo Xiao Mei (the name was decided at the beginning of production, and later changed for some reason).
The first China original cartoon to enter the international film festival.
The story tells that Doudou's father had a car accident, and Doudou had to stay with his aunt (grandmother) who looked terrible for a while. Because aunt has the ability to subdue demons and is a master at catching evil spirits, ghosts are afraid of her. One of the ghosts, who was locked in a jar, accidentally slipped out because of the fun of Doudou. To deal with aunt, ghost. . . . . . . . . .
Cartoon features:
Add many elements of China folk color, especially the customs of Ghost Festival and fishing village, which are more prominent and show their own characteristics. When it comes to painting skills and stories, Magic Grandma can't compare with such big bosses as Disney in the United States or Miyazaki Hayao in Japan, but her sincerity in making them is undeniable. At least they don't rely on computers, they are all painters sketching (with Japan as consultant and post-work), and they don't invite foreign aid (does the other party only provide funds for transnational cooperation with South Korea? ), from story structure to character modeling, are not bound by commercial considerations (at least I don't believe it). The only thing that is not enough is money and time (which I agree with).
Main characters:
Mother-in-law: On the surface, she is an old woman who sells fish and eggs for a living. In fact, the family has been shouldering the task of catching ghosts since her grandfather's generation, but she was accused of superstition by her own daughter. He looks fierce and serious, but he actually cherishes his daughter and grandson Doudou. In order to deal with the demon in the cat (Koro), he took the dog (Silo) around and almost died.
Doudou: Five-year-old, naughty and not sensible. Because my father had a car accident, my mother sent him to Keelung to live with my grandmother. She thinks her grandmother is fierce and eccentric. In order to return to her mother's arms in the city, she promised to sell her grandmother, which led to her being knocked down by a car. Finally, she realized that everything was the devil's trick and caught the evil spirits with her grandmother.
Bian Xiao: Doudou happened to find a lovely snake, which was crushed by a car. And promised to help it regenerate, so it became an invisible friend of Doudou.
Little girl: An introverted girl with a doll in her hand is too afraid of reincarnation. On that Mid-Autumn Festival, I accidentally met Doudou, and since then, Xiao Doudou has an invisible friend.
A Min (called Po in mainland China): Stuttering is the first friend Doudou met when he came to grandma's house. He had a whale friend that Doug couldn't see. Later, he went to save the whale alone but was caught by evil spirits.

Director profile:
Wang Xiaodi, born in Taipei from 65438 to 0953, holds a master's degree in drama from Trinity University in Texas. 1979 returned to Taiwan to establish Minxin Film Company, 1992 Huang Liming founded Minxin Theatre and Paddy Film Studio.
Behind the scenes/tidbits:
Everyone has a childlike innocence, directed by Wang Xiaodi.
Reporter: You've been making feature films. Why are you interested in making animated films?
Wang: I was very moved to see Gong's grotesque animations, especially his "Witch's Home Help" and the previous "Goodbye Firefly". I think the imagination of Taiwan Province Province is getting narrower and narrower because of tradition and education system. Why don't we give full play to our imagination?
Reporter: Is there any special significance in the story of Magic Grandma?
Wang: Our parents are from the old society. They tell you all day how hard we used to be. But our children 180 degrees is different, and the room is full of toys. How do you help two generations communicate? The previous generation had their experience, wisdom and tolerance. Have their views on heaven and earth. The ghost grandma in Magic Grandma is very generous. She has a modern side and a traditional side. We arranged for a child to enter grandma's world and let him find that grandma's world is not so old-fashioned.
Reporter: What is the most difficult thing to make this film?
Wang: Hollywood cartoons take several years and cost hundreds of millions of yuan. However, because of the National Film Counseling Fund (NT$100,000 yuan), we have to complete them within one year, and the production cost is only NT$ 40 million. It is very painful to have no money to finish them regularly.
Reporter: This film has won honors in some overseas film festivals and even in Taipei. Why do you think the judges like this movie?
Wang: Some professional animators like creativity, humor and imagination in movies. They don't mind that your movies are short of funds and the quality is not as good as Hollywood. I won the first prize at the Taipei Film Festival. I think the judges want the audience to like this award-winning film. When the film was released in the United States, some ABC (American-born China people) also liked it.
Reporter: Some people in Taiwan Province Province agree with this film. Does Taiwan Province Province Film Need New Elements?
Wang: Wonder Grandma won the first prize at Taipei Film Festival. I think the judges wanted to make some less serious films. It is very touching when you hear the children's laughter in the cinema. You will have a deep understanding. Everyone has a childlike innocence, but because of economic pressure and work reasons, it must be collected, but the witch released them and recalled her childhood.
