Creative background: In the first year of Shenlong (705), Du was exiled to Fengzhou (now northwest Shanxi, Hexi Province). He passed through Annan (now Hanoi, Vietnam) and wrote this poem in a guest house or post station because he missed his hometown. Appreciate the word "across the toe" in the first couplet, indicating that the detention place is across the toe in ancient times. The name "cross toe" first gives a strange impression. According to legend, people here are called straddle-toed people because their toes look different. This land is named after people. However, what amazed the poet was the "special weather" here. What is very different between Annan and the Central Plains is the scenery and climate, which is the poet's real immersive feeling. The second sentence "cold is late, warm is late, and urgent is urgent" summarizes Annan's climate characteristics. The cold season is late and short, and the warm season is early and long.
Zhuan Xu focuses on scenery, and the last sentence "Fruits are ripe in the mountains in the middle of winter" depicts the fruits in the alpine mountain areas in the middle of winter, just like autumn colors in the Central Plains. This is really strange to northerners. This is also a further concrete description of "cold night" in the first couplet. The next sentence, "Wild flowers bloom in the first month", describes the blooming of mountain flowers in the first month of the Spring Festival, indicating that the climate is very mild, just like the summer in the Central Plains, which is a further concrete description of the "warm promotion" in the first couplet.
Necklace couplets focus on describing the weather, saying that "accumulated rain produces fog", which means that Annan often has rainy days for a long time, and summer and autumn become rainy seasons, and the water does not dry up and it is foggy. "It thunders under light frost" means that thunder still fluctuates in winter. Light frost, that is, thin frost, shows that Annan only has thin frost in the coldest winter, which is different from the late autumn frost in the north. These phenomena are impossible in the eyes of ordinary Zhongyuan people.
In this couplet and necklace, the poet describes mangoes, wild flowers, accumulated rain, fog and thunder, which are common things in people's daily life. Only the seasonal words and verbs of mid-winter, the first month, ripe, open, raw and low are skillfully combined to create a wonderful artistic conception, showing different scenery and weather at four o'clock and crossing their toes. This is an image summary and expression of the poet's life experience in Annan in the past year, full of surprises, excitement, praise and melancholy.
