Mumakil
Mumakil (singular form: Mumak) is a creature from Halad, similar to the elephant, but bigger than it. Maybe they are the ancestors of elephants. The name mumak or mumakil comes from Gondor, and these creatures are called Oliphant Oliphaunts in Hobbit folklore.
These two towers describe these creatures. Sam expressed his wish to see A Mu Makill, citing the Hobbit legend that they were "as big as a house". Later, Sam found one as big as a "moving hill". Tolkien wrote that Sam may have magnified these creatures in his eyes because of "fear and surprise".
They were trained as beasts of burden by Halad native Caladelli, and Mu Makile was also used in the tertiary war. During the Lord of the Rings Jihad, they assembled in Sirian, Iraq, and were used in the battle of Peirano Plain, similar to the war elephants in the real world. During the war, they carried buildings similar to towers (similar to real-world elephant carts, but larger) and loaded with archers from Halad. The skin of this creature is so thick that it is almost impenetrable-impenetrable, so to speak. The only way to kill them is to shoot them in the eye. For elephants in the real world, horses are inaccessible. They can effectively resist the enemy cavalry. Tolkien hinted that this creature is about to become extinct, and "there are still relatives living in his later years, leaving only magnificent memories of the past".
"Oliphant" is also the title of a funny short poem, which was quoted by Sam, a Hobbit, to describe this creature, based on Charles' traditional animal fable. This poem appeared in Adventures of the Twin Towers and Adventures of Tom Bambadier.
Oliphaunt is a variant of the ancient word oilphant, which means elephant, ivory, elephant's teeth, musical instrument made of ivory or instrument similar to horn. Besides Tolkien, the most commonly used word in literary works is Song of Roland: the knight Roland was defeated in the battle of Lan Cerval, and it was not until he and his companions blew the ivory horn for help at the last minute. Roland's horn is equivalent to the horn of Boromir in The Lord of the Rings, the horn of Helmet Valley and the horn of buckland. This is also Mu Makill of Rouen.
