How to teach children to learn reading comprehension
Teaching others to read is a very fulfilling thing. Whether you are teaching your child to read his/her first book or helping a friend improve his/her reading ability, use the following steps and instructions to achieve your teaching purpose.

Teach the most basic first

Teach literacy first. If you want to learn to read Chinese, of course, you must recognize some words first. Of course, if you want to understand English, you must first know the whole English alphabet. Use flip charts, blackboards or cardboard to show children how to write and pronounce. There are children's literacy textbooks on the market. You can teach them one by one until they can all recognize them. For English letters, you can teach to sing alphabet songs to help you remember.

If you use the card memory method, after children can remember some words, they will disrupt the order of cards and pick out a few for children to recognize and consolidate their learning achievements.

You can also read a word and let the children look for it in the card.

When teaching children, you can teach names first. In this way, these words will be very special and important to them. Because children hear their own names every day, they will have personal feelings when learning how to write their own names, so they are willing to learn how to write their own names.

Teach pronunciation. When your students are familiar with the shapes of words, you can start teaching them the pronunciation of each word. It is not enough to know the pronunciation of Chinese characters and English letters, because the pronunciation of letters depends on words, and the pronunciation of letters in different words may be different. For example, the pronunciation of the letter "B" in the word "bob" is different from that in the word "bee". Once children have mastered the different pronunciations of letters, they can combine letters into words and practice the pronunciation of words themselves.

Mastering the basic knowledge of oral pronunciation and being able to pronounce different words is a great progress, which is called the process of "voice awakening".

Teach children the pronunciation of each word one by one. List some words that start with each letter. Let the children list words that start with different letters.

You can also point to a word and ask your child what letter the word begins with.

Children can be familiar with some common pinyin (or phonetic notation) pronunciations, such as ch, sh, zh, qu, g, k and their pronunciations.

Teach some short monosyllabic words. Show your children some monosyllabic words with two or three letters. It's best to learn these consonant-vowel-consonant words first, such as cats or dogs.

Let children practice the words by themselves, spell a simple monosyllabic word, such as "sit", read each letter, and then try to pronounce the word. If you don't read it correctly, you can ask your child to read the letters. Children can get feedback, or remember the pronunciation of letters and words, or be corrected. If the child pronounces the word correctly, praise it.

Repeat this process every other simple monosyllabic word. After writing five words, go back to the first word and see if the child can read it quickly.

In this way, we constantly know new words and gradually add long words with more syllables.

Teach common words. Commonly used words are words that need to be remembered by heart, because they are a little different from the general spelling rules. Many common words such as "Dad", "Once again" and "Friend" are also frequently used words. Therefore, when people see these words in the text, they should be able to recognize them immediately.

The most common common words have been compiled into lists, and there are several such lists on the market to choose from. [ 1]

When teaching common words, you can try to associate each word with a picture. Teaching children to look at pictures is helpful to establish the connection between words and images in their minds and deepen their understanding and memory of words.

It can be taught by reading a picture card. One side of the card is text, and the other side is the corresponding color picture. Literacy card is a good teaching tool.

Repetitive memory is the key to mastering common words. Beginners should have many opportunities to practice spelling and write a new common word. Repetitive spelling of some commonly used words is the most effective strategy to help children master and remember this word truly and completely.

Establish vocabulary. The definition of a child's reading vocabulary is the amount of words he can understand and understand in reading. Expanding children's vocabulary is a necessary condition for reading teaching. The bigger a child's vocabulary, the more he can read and understand slightly advanced words. You can help children improve their vocabulary in the following ways:

Encourage children to read as many articles on different topics as possible. When reading, let the children underline the words they don't know, and then you can explain them, or let them look them up in the dictionary to find out the meaning of the new words.

Teach them the definition of new words, or other characteristics of new words, such as the meaning of roots, the meaning of each word in Chinese words, or the meaning of prefixes and suffixes in English words, the attributes of words, etc.

Use the method of association to help children associate the words they already know with new words. For example, find a synonym for a new word whose meaning is known.

Cultivate the fluency of reading. Fluent reading refers to reading quickly and accurately, with a certain rhythm, intonation and expressiveness. Beginners who have just started learning to read have not yet this ability. So when they encounter unfamiliar words, they will stutter. Without reading fluency, children will focus on correctly reading the words in front of them, rather than absorbing and understanding the meaning of the words. If so, children will not understand the meaning of the article and lose the meaning of reading. Therefore, it is very important to cultivate reading fluency.

Some children who can't read fluently always pause when reading, and can't read the article or give the correct pronunciation of the words. There are also some children who can't express themselves when they are reading. They don't really understand the meaning of words from beginning to end.

The best way to train beginners to read fluently is to read repeatedly. In repeated reading, children read a paragraph several times, and the teacher corrects and gives feedback on speech speed and intonation, explains new words and demonstrates smooth reading.

It is also important to ensure that children are familiar with different types of pronunciation. Let children know the influence of punctuation in the article on reading fluency and intonation, such as how to react when commas, periods, question marks and exclamation points appear.

Test reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is the ability to gradually understand the content of the text read. In order to understand an article, children must be able to associate the words they read with their exact meanings. Making children understand the meaning of the words they read is your main goal as a teacher. Reading is meaningless if you can't understand the meaning.

To test children's progress, you can test their reading comprehension. The general practice is for children to read a paragraph and then answer questions about the content. The form of the exam can be multiple choice questions, short answer questions and fill-in-the-blank questions.

Look at the pictures and read. Reading picture books is a good way to help children build vocabulary and understand stories. Before reading a new book with your child, you can quickly turn pages and look at pictures or illustrations. Teach children how to find contextual clues to help them read.

You can ask your child some questions that can be understood by looking at pictures. For example, there is a colored word. You can use this colored word to ask your child what is described in the picture.
