Why does Erlang God have a third eye?
We have talked about the origin of Erlang God before, and the stories about Erlang God in history, including The Journey to the West and The Romance of the Gods, have not explicitly mentioned that Erlang God has three eyes, so where did his third eye come from?

Erlang God in Film and Television Plays

We watched the cartoon "Make a scene in Heaven". Erlang God opened his third eye and saw the temple on the Monkey King's body. The monkey's tail turned into a flagpole. I believe many people are deeply impressed by this classic picture, but we read the novel. The wonderful story of Journey to the West and Erlang fighting the Monkey King just says, "Look carefully and see the flagpole (pole) standing behind." Whether this phoenix eye is the third eye of Erlang God is unclear to the author. From the shape of the phoenix eye, it can also be understood as the third eye, but it cannot be said for sure.

Only in the song book "God List" of the car, it is clearly written that Yang Jian has three eyes:

Wearing a Wolong crown and a moist robe.

The yellow silk is tied to the waist and the foot color is bright.

The dragon sword leans across his back, and his personality and appearance are just beginning and end.

The face knife is like jade, and the nose is as high as gall.

I have one eye and three eyes, and three strands of beard float on my forehead with the wind.

Lin Lin's figure is ten feet, which is not outstanding.

Come to the hall and kowtow. Please listen to me.

I am in Jinxia Cave in Yuquan Mountain, following the Taoist teachings of Ding Yu.

Disciple Yang Jian came to work here on the orders of his teacher before joining the army. My teacher will come to earth soon to answer the fate.

The so-called Che Wang Mi Quben is the general name of the operas, Quyi engravings and manuscripts collected by Wang Fu Khan in Chechnya, Mongolia, Beijing and other places in the Qing Dynasty, which began to spread after the Republic of China. 1925 was purchased by Ma Yuqing of Beijing Comte School, entrusted by Gu Jiegang, classified and catalogued 1444 species, 2 154 volumes, and the total name of Mongolian Che Wang Mi Qu Ben was kept in Peking University Library. After Comte School, 265,438+09 kinds and 2,560 music books were purchased. The contents of Le Shu are connected with the last batch, and the paper and binding are the same, which are kept in the Capital Library. At present, there are 1663 songs with 47 14 volumes.

The novel Romance of Gods and Demons was published in Wanli period of Ming Dynasty, and Qufu Shenshu was published in Tongzhi period of Qing Dynasty. This is the re-creation of the novel by folk lyrics art. Compared with the novel, the content is similar, but in terms of details, Qufu can be said to spare no effort in writing, so there is a very detailed description of Yang Jian's story.

Another explicit statement that Erlang God has three eyes is the ballad "The Fairy Sword and Female Sword" in the late Qing Dynasty: "Wearing a three-mountain hat and chain mail gold, his face is white with three eyes, and his hands are three points and two blades." In the ancient mythology of China, only a few immortals have the ability of three eyes, and the most famous one is Ma Wangye. Horses, namely Ma Tianjun, Shuicaoma and Emperor. He once fought tooth and nail in the Three Realms, and was later surrendered by Zhenwu Emperor, becoming one of his 36 generals and an important protector of Taoism. The Jade Emperor once named him "Marshal of the Fire Department". His three eyes are the essence of fire, the star of fire, the day of fire and the symbol of Vulcan. The owner of the horse has three eyes to describe this man as very powerful.

Legend has it that Lu Ban didn't know Zhang and thought he was an ignorant Mount Tai. The more he thought about it, the more ashamed he felt. He gouged out one of his eyes and left it on the edge of Zhao Zhouqiao. Later, Ma Wangye passed by Zhao Zhouqiao, picked up this eye and put it on his forehead. Later, he became a three-eyed horse. It is said that there are still eight hoof prints of a donkey, three-foot rut of a diesel unicycle and two big handprints of Luban archway. The carpenter hung up the wire and the gunman closed his left eye, because Lu Ban was "ignorant" and gouged out his left eye. However, careful analysis is wrong. Lu Ban was born in the Spring and Autumn Period, and Zhang was born in the Tang Dynasty and built in the Sui Dynasty. These three things together can only be a legend.

The image of Marshal Ma depicted in the Three Treasures Eunuchs Journey to the West is as white as snow: "Marshal's name is Lianghui, and his eyes are wide open. Wearing a hat, hardware bricks are hidden in the gods. "According to the three religions looking for God, Ma has been a saint three times, and killed the Dragon King in the East China Sea to save his mother's life. Later, when the Jade Emperor saw him as a general, he made him the real Emperor Wu Bao Tian Department. It is described in the biography of the Five Immortals Palace, that Maling Palace is good at seeking fire, and there are golden brick fire pills in its body, which can be used to subdue monsters at any time. Therefore, people later regarded him as "Vulcan", and often held "Huaguang Festival" in August and September to pray for exemption from fire, and Jiro was just the water god.

Fire belongs to the south, which is an important basis for Yu Xiangdou to create Travel Notes in the South with Huaguang as the protagonist. In Travels of the South (also known as Biography of Emperor Hua Guang of the Five Signs), Hua Guang is the son of a monk with three eyes, so he is also called "three eyes". Emperor Huaguang, commonly known as Vulcan. Fire-averse Cantonese opera actors regard Emperor Huaguang as their grandfather. Whenever a new stage is built, a new play is staged or the troupe goes out to perform, they will worship Emperor Huaguang. September 28th of the lunar calendar is the birthday of Emperor Huaguang, and the Cantonese Opera Troupe will hold a grand ancestor worship activity. Today, many Cantonese opera artists still have the custom of "Hua Guang Birthday".

What is the relationship between Huaguang/Mawangye and Erlang God? We found that Huaguang and Jade Emperor had similar blood relationship with Erlang God. In the sixteenth episode of "A Journey to the South", Xu was killed by a monk and a crying god, and was buried in a coffin, which coincided with the arrival of the teacher Wang Guangfo and threatened them: "You two don't know, this turned out to be the nephew of the Jade Emperor. If you take it to see the jade emperor, the jade emperor will get angry and say,' You two are so bold that you will cry my nephew to death' and pass on the jade. In chapter 17 of the book, Wang Guangfo, who suffered from fire, advised the Monkey King to spare Huaguang, and once again mentioned the relationship between Huaguang and the jade emperor's nephew-however, in previous folklore, there was only one nephew of the jade emperor, that is, Guan Erlang. In this way, the stories of Erlang God and Hua Guang began to overlap in the process of folk circulation, which made them show some similar features, such as eyes.

Osamu Tezuka drew a boy with three eyes. He loves the Monkey King so much that he doesn't know if he is influenced by Jiro, the fairy in The Journey to the West. The boy with three eyes should seal the third eye with X-tape. Once opened, he will become smart but tyrannical. The boy with three eyes holds a scepter similar to "Saint Saint" in Athena's hand. The weapon made by Erlang God is a three-pointed double-edged knife, which is not among the eighteen weapons.

Three-pointed double-edged knife is a kind of China ancient halberd, which consists of a three-pointed double-edged halberd and two three-pointed double-edged guns. The front end of this weapon is in the shape of a trident knife, and there are blades on both sides of the blade. There are many people who use this weapon in Water Margin, such as Shijin, Kowloon, and Peng, the general of Tianmu. Mei Zhan, our time, chariot general Zhou Ang, deputy commander-in-chief He Chongbao of Liao Dynasty and others all used them, but they were all used as weapons on horseback, and few used them. The last time they appeared as stepping weapons was in Xu Haofeng's film The Master. In a street fight in Tianjin, a master of Tianjin Wei used a three-pointed double-edged knife, but they were finally defeated by Liao Fan. The reason why it is mainly used as a weapon on horseback is mainly because it is heavy and long, and it is extremely difficult to display it in the next step. Of course, Jiro is a fairy, so he is not bound by this.
