Murals are decorative paintings painted on the walls or ceilings of buildings. It is the oldest painting form in ancient and modern Chinese and foreign history. 1. China Tomb Mural:

At present, the earliest murals found in the Han Dynasty are widely distributed. There are murals in Han tombs in Henan, Shanxi, Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong and Inner Mongolia. The contents of the painting include myths and legends, historical stories and life scenes.

2. China ancient cave temple murals:

Since Buddhism was introduced into China, besides tomb murals, there have been a large number of murals promoting the contents of Buddhism. There are many exquisite Buddhist murals in cave temples in Gansu and Henan.

The total area of murals in Mogao Grottoes is 45,000 square meters, and the main themes are Buddhist paintings, miraculous paintings, story paintings, Buddhist historical paintings, portraits of patrons (portraits) and decorative patterns. Most of them are Buddhist posters drawn according to Buddhist scriptures, but when they are expressed through plastic arts, ancient artists express the story content by shaping the images and life scenes of gods and characters according to reality and social life at that time, so it directly and indirectly reflects social history. The murals in Mogao Grottoes are rich in content and can be called "the library on the wall". A mural explains these magical and moving stories.

There are rich images of ancient musicians and musical instruments in the murals of Dunhuang grottoes. According to the survey and statistics of the Music and Dance Research Office of Dunhuang Research Institute in recent years, there are more than 200 caves painted with musicians' images in Mogao Grottoes alone, with more than 3,400 musicians, more than 490 large and small bands, 44 kinds of musical instruments and more than 4,300 pieces (there are many musical instruments floating in the air without drums in large-scale paintings, so there are more musical instruments than musicians).
