Heng Anshi said that when he was in his twenties, he felt very confused, dropped out of college and did odd jobs everywhere. "Finally, my parents decided to go back to China to buy books for the Library of Congress. So, they sent me first. From then on, I began to truly integrate into China culture. "

When Heng An came to Beijing, he taught English in Fu Jen Catholic University boys' high school. After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and the United States declared war on Japan, Heng Anshi was detained by the Japanese occupying Beijing at that time and sent to a concentration camp in Weifang, Shandong, because he was an American citizen. Heng Anshi tried his best to contact the guerrillas outside. Finally, with the help of guerrillas, he and a companion successfully escaped from prison on June 9 1944.
