Why is Nanjing called Ning?
Reason:

Jiangning District, formerly known as Jiangning County, still exists. Even the name "Jiangsu" comes from "Jiangning" and "Suzhou". Jiangning, in 937, Xu Zhimo (Li Bian) replaced Wu, and the Southern Tang Dynasty was founded, with Jinling as its capital, and Jinling House was changed to jiangning house. The Northern Song Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty were also jiangning house. Jiangning is also a county name, either in the urban area or in the suburbs. Both the Qing Dynasty and Shangyuan County are the capitals of Jiangsu Province.

During the period of the Republic of China, the National Government changed jiangning house to Nanjing, and later renamed it Nanjing, or "Beijing" for short. 1949, Nanjing was liberated, with China as its capital. According to historical habits, there is generally only one "Beijing" in a country, so there is a saying that Nanjing will be changed back to "Jiangning", but it was later denied by the leaders. Just change the abbreviation to "Ning" and the name of Nanjing will be preserved.
