Since 1980s, the publishing industry has been facing huge market temptation. Bookstores have always maintained the taste and characteristics of triple edition books, at the same time, they have made active explorations and attempts in exploring and developing the market, established triple reading club, restored Reading magazine and Life Weekly, and founded Philharmonic magazine.

Since the end of 2003, the management of Sanlian Bookstore is not harmonious with Sanlian tradition. For the sake of economic benefits, a large number of textbooks and supplementary books are published, which violates the state regulations. Two magazines, Sanlian Financial Competitiveness Talent Wealth Edition and Reading China Civil Servants, are published in the form of one or two issues, which is quite different from the original academic taste of the magazines. The behavior of the main leaders of Sanlian Bookstore caused public anger, and several employees jointly drafted an open letter to express their concerns about the present situation and prospects of Sanlian Bookstore.

On March 1 day, 2004, after the illegal operation of two periodicals and the open letter of employees were reported by the media, the triple storm caused great shock in the academic and publishing circles. Chen Lemin, Xu Jilin, Ge, Zi Zhongyun, and other writers and scholars have written articles recalling the "Sanlian" in the past, expressing their views and concerns about the "Sanlian Storm" in another way.

In April 2004, 42 private bookstores in China, such as Beijing Wansheng Bookstore and Shanghai Jifeng Bookstore, jointly submitted an open letter to Sanlian Bookstore and China Publishing Group, demanding the impeachment of the general manager and editor-in-chief of Sanlian Bookstore, which triggered the Sanlian Defence War in China cultural circles. With the joint efforts of people from all walks of life, Sanlian Bookstore held a staff meeting on September 14, officially announcing the transfer of editor-in-chief Wang Jixian, and the "Sanlian Defence War" on September 180 ended.
