The history of Wuhan University can be traced back to 1893. Zhang Zhidong, Governor of Huguang, founded the School of Self-improvement at the invitation of the Qing government. New China was founded 1949, and the school was renamed Wuhan University.
The present emblem of Wuhan University is designed for 1993 to celebrate its centenary.
