Xiangnan College was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education in 2003, and passed the undergraduate teaching qualification assessment of newly-built undergraduate colleges by the Ministry of Education with excellent results in May 201March. Its school-running history began with the Third Women's Normal School in Hunan Province founded in 19 12.

The school is located in Chenzhou, the "southern gate" of Hunan Province, which enjoys the reputation of "the 18th blessed land in the world". It is divided into two campuses. The main campus is located at the eastern foot of the scenic Wang Xianling Ecological Park.

The teaching experimental area, sports activity area and teachers' and students' living areas have reasonable layout, perfect facilities and complete functions, forming a modern university park integrating informationization, gardening and ecology.

There are 22 teaching units in the school, including 1 directly affiliated hospital, 3 cooperative affiliated hospitals, and11jointly run schools by industrial enterprises. There are 48 undergraduate majors, covering 9 disciplines of economy, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management and art. The school enrolls students from 28 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, with full-time students 19326.

20 14 the school official website showed that the library of Xiangnan University has a total of 1338700 volumes of Chinese and western paper books, and has subscribed to more than 800 periodicals/kloc-0 and nearly 200 newspapers all the year round. It has six Chinese full-text databases, including China HowNet Journal, Doctoral Dissertation Database and Wan Fang Data, and is one of the member databases of Hunan University Digital Library.
