After King Khalid died in June 1982, he was appointed as the Crown Prince and concurrently served as the First Deputy Prime Minister and Commander of garde nationale.
On August 1 2005, King Fahd died of illness, and the prince succeeded to the throne, becoming the supreme leader of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the supreme commander of the armed forces, the prime minister of the government and the commander of the National Guard, and holding the supreme power of the royal family and the state.
