Rao is an ancient multi-ethnic and multi-source surname group. The original birthplace of Rao family was Raoyang in ancient times. Raoyang has a long history and was a city of Zhao during the Warring States Period. There is a record in the historical book "Historical Records Zhao Shijia": "I mourned the king for six years and sealed the throne of Chang 'an". Rao took himself as his surname, which has been more than 2200 years. The migration route of Rao surname began in Raoyang, Hebei (one of many origins), followed by Raozhou, Jiangxi, and then moved south to Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong. Some of them moved to Taiwan Province, because there are many mountains and few fields in the south of China. At present, there are about 89 genealogies of Rao surname in Shanghai Library, mostly from Hunan and Hubei, all of which are old genealogies decades ago. There is no new spectrum in the above picture. Libraries in Guangdong, Hunan, Fujian and other places also have old versions of Rao Family Tree. The newly compiled genealogy is collected in libraries of Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong provinces.

Rao's family is mainly centered in Jiangxi and distributed in Hubei, Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, Zhejiang, Henan, Anhui, Sichuan, Yunnan and other places. Most of the Rao surnames in these places migrated from Jiangxi in past dynasties (refer to Huguang Fill Sichuan).

Hubei: Guangji County (Wuxue City), Songzi City, Shishou City (Jingzhou Area), Xishui County/Jianli County, chibi city, Huangmei County, Huangshi City and Shiyan City.

Hunan: Changsha, Chengbu, Xu Xian, Cili, Sangzhi, Yuanling, Xupu and Nanxian.

Zhejiang: Changshan County, Jinyun County, qingtian county and Wenzhou.

Fujian: Shaowu, Shunchang, Silla, Wuping, Shaxian, Jian 'ou and Pucheng.

Guangdong: Meizhou, Chaozhou, Shantou, Chaoan, Puning, Tai Po, Shaoguan and Yunfu.
