Buildings should have souls. Cultural accomplishment determines people's temperament; Is cultural accumulation the soul of residential buildings? This magazine interviewed Mr. Lin Zheng, a national first-class registered architect and lecturer in Tsinghua University, on the relationship between culture and residential building design. Culture is expressed in a specific architectural background.
Residential consumption: we discussed how to design a century-old house from two aspects: the function and appearance of the house. This time, we intend to discuss it from the cultural level. How to express cultural elements in residential design? Lin Zheng: Culture is regional, historic and contemporary. Therefore, the cultural expression in residential design must be observed in the context of a specific time and place, and the expression of material elements and spiritual elements that constitute culture is meaningful.
The Shuhe project in Lijiang, Yunnan, which we are designing is a comprehensive consideration of Naxi culture, including Dongba culture formed by the ancient Naxi nationality and caravan culture on the ancient tea-horse road, and it is expressed by material entities-small bridges, flowing water, streets and houses. Residential consumption: What buildings in Shanghai really embody Shanghai culture? What are their characteristics? Culture should have a process of inheritance and development. What reference and influence does Shanghai culture have on contemporary architects?
Lin Zheng: "All rivers run into the sea" is the connotation of Shanghai culture. In architecture, represented by Shanghai architectural culture, Shanghai architectural culture has been bred for a long time. Shanghai's modern architecture in the past hundred years has laid a rich architectural foundation, typical of which are the public buildings on the Bund and the alley houses in Shikumen. Many new Shanghai-style buildings have emerged in the new period, among which Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Grand Theatre are the most typical. In addition, there are a number of excellent cultural and artistic facilities such as Shanghai Library, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.
The architectural design of Shanghai Grand Theatre is based on China Jiugongge, with a crystal clear all-glass exterior wall. The curved roof looks like a Dapeng spreading its wings, giving people a strong sense of movement. Shanghai Museum quoted the creativity of ancient circular places in China. The whole building consists of a square base and a huge dome. From a distance, the whole building looks like an ancient Chinese bronze ware.
During the development of Pudong, a large number of Chinese and foreign designs poured in, bringing new technologies, but more influenced by local culture. Jinmao Tower is like a skyscraper with dense eaves, and the World Trade Center outlines a moon door in the air. Shanghai's architectural culture has created a world architectural exposition with the coexistence of Chinese and western cultures, the blending of Chinese and foreign cultures, the blending of arts and the unique style. These excellent architectural designs are worth learning and using for reference by contemporary architects.
