Changzhou University was founded in 1978, formerly known as Changzhou Branch and Wuxi Branch of Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology.

During the period of 1984, the people's government of Jiangsu Province and sinopec group implemented a joint school-running mechanism, and Jiangsu Institute of Chemical Technology became an early university to jointly run schools by local governments and national ministries.

From 65438 to 0992, the academic system was directly transferred to Sinopec and renamed Jiangsu Institute of Petrochemical Technology. In 2000, it was reorganized into a university led by Jiangsu Province and managed by Sinopec.

In 2002, the school was renamed "Jiangsu Institute of Technology".
