Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning Province, a sub-provincial city, a megacity and the core city of Shenyang metropolitan area. It is also an important central city, advanced equipment manufacturing base and national historical and cultural city in Northeast China.

Shenyang is located in the south of northeast China and the middle of Liaoning Province. Between 4 1 degree north latitude 1 1 minute 5 1 second to 43 degrees 2 minutes 13 seconds east longitude 122 degrees 25 minutes 9 seconds to 123 degrees 48 minutes 24 seconds. The width from east to west is 1 15km, and the length from north to south is 205km. The total area of the city 1.286 square kilometers. It borders Fushun City in the east, Benxi City and Liaoyang City in the south, Tai 'an City in Anshan City, Heishan City in Jinzhou City and Zhangwu County in Fuxin City in the west, and Kezuohou Banner in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Changtu County in Tieling City, Kaiyuan County and Tieling County in the north. Most of Shenyang's structures are located in the northern edge of the Sino-Korean paraplatform, and only the north of Kaiyuan-Chifeng fault, that is, Faku and Kangping in the north belong to Jilin quasi-fold belt. Shenyang area is dominated by plains with flat terrain, with an average elevation of about 50 meters. Mountain hills are concentrated in the northeast and southeast, and belong to the extension of Liaodong hills. The western part is the alluvial plain of Liaohe River and Hunhe River, and the terrain is slowly inclined from east to west. The highest point in the city is 447.2 meters above sea level, located in Miaotaishan, Faku County. The lowest altitude is 5.3 meters, located in Yujiafang Town, Liaozhong District.
