Chong'an Temple

Chong'an Temple is the oldest temple in Wuxi, with the same name as the Shanghai City God Temple, Suzhou Mystery Temple and Nanjing Confucius Temple. It used to be a clean Buddhist shrine, but later it was not famous as a temple, and it developed into a bustling business district, which became synonymous with Wuxi city center.

According to legend, Chong'an Temple was the residence of Wang Xizhi, a calligrapher in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. In 364, Emperor Ai of Jin changed it into a temple and named it Xingning Temple. In the second year (977), Song Taiping was changed to Chong'an Temple. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, it was named Jinghui Temple. It was destroyed several times later. After the Revolution of 1911, statues were destroyed and houses were used for other purposes.

The former site of Chong'an Temple starts from Sheng Xiang Road and Xinsheng Road in the east, Zhongshan Road in the west, Guanqian Street (now Renmin Road) in the south and Xiatang in the north. The main buildings are: the mountain gate, engraved with inscriptions such as "Liangxi guarding the gate" and "Wu Hui scenic spot" in gold bricks, with two generals, Hum and Ha, on both sides. After liberation, it was demolished and the first grocery store was built on the original site. The King Kong Temple, with four sculptures by donkey kong, was changed into a shop after the Revolution of 1911, and now it is a supermarket. Daxiong Hall is the main building complex in Chong'an Temple, with long cloisters on the left and right, a bell tower in the East Hall and Guanyin Pavilion in the West Hall. 1927, Wuxi City Federation of Trade Unions led by Chyi Chin was located in Ursa Major Hall. West Temple, in the 31st year of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty (1905), Wu Zhihui, Yu Fu and others founded a third-class school here. Imperial Pavilion, in the first year of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty, Liao Lun, the magistrate of Wuxi, built an imperial pavilion in front of Daxiong Hall, commonly known as the Imperial Pavilion, to praise the emperor. The tablet in the pavilion reads: "Long live the emperor today, long live, long live". Whenever the first day of the first lunar month, the first half of the first lunar month or the emperor's wedding, funeral and celebration, local officials will go to the Imperial Pavilion to pay homage. After the Revolution of 1911, it was demolished and changed into a corrugated open hall with all sides open. There is a food market in the morning and a variety show and Huang Ting food stall in the afternoon. Huang Ting snacks bring together dozens of snacks in Wuxi. There are also noodle restaurants such as Gongbeilou, Xinwanxing and Jin Apeng. 1975, the location of Huang Ting was transformed into a four-story Renmin Road food market with an area of more than 5,000 square meters, and now it is a supermarket. In addition, there are South Yard, North Yard, Manshein and Yin Zhongyuan, all of which have been demolished or rebuilt.

East of Chong'an Temple used to be an empty Taoist temple palace, which was the largest Taoist temple in Wuxi. The main buildings are: Sanqing Hall, which was demolished in 19 15 and converted into a city library. There is dzmz in the library building, which is called Bell Tower. In 2000, the city library moved to the south of Taihu Square. After the reconstruction of Sanqing Hall, the Taoist priest built a small Sanqing Hall next to it, including Leizun Hall and Fire Temple. Folk musician Hua (the blind) has lived here for nearly 40 years, that is, No.30 Library Road, which is now his former residence. Before liberation, Yuhuangtang was the meeting place of Wuxi Senate, and after liberation, it was the home of urban teenagers. There is a garden shopping mall now. Sanguantang has been demolished.

In the past, Guanyin's birthday was on June 19th of the lunar calendar, and the Jade Emperor's birthday was on the ninth day of the first month. Sacrifice and worship activities were grand and developed into temple fairs. From the beginning of the year to the fifth day of the first month, people from four townships and eight towns in Wuxi come to visit Chong'an Temple, which is as lively as the temple fair.

Because of Chong'an Temple, there is Chong'an Temple Primary School, which was built in 1909 at the back door of the temple, that is, the back door of Chong'an Temple. Revolutionary Lu once wrote a school card for his alma mater. 197 1 year, the school headquarters was given to Chongwu Primary School (later called Chongan Primary School). 1984, Chong'an Temple primary school moved to a new school building next to the library. Chong 'an Primary School also moved into the former site of Dalouxiang Primary School on 1982, and the former site of Miaohoumen was rebuilt by the Municipal Bureau of Retired Veteran Cadres, and an activity room for retired veteran cadres in Wuxi was set up. In 1990s, due to the renovation of Chong'an Temple, the teaching building of Chong'an Temple Primary School was demolished and the school was merged into Chongan Primary School in Dalou Lane.

In 2003, the first phase of the renovation project in Chong'an Temple will be implemented. Relying on the original cultural relics such as parks, ancient wells, former residences and ancient temples in the city, a boutique clothing area, a cultural entertainment area and a commercial service area will be built, which will become a characteristic commercial pedestrian street integrating the functions of characteristic business, catering, culture and leisure. The total land area of Chong'an Temple renovation project is 28.6 hectares. After the transformation, it will be the first prosperous central business district in southern Jiangsu and the first-class in the country.
