Wuhan Library was founded in 1946 and 10. Its predecessor was Hankou Municipal Library. 1953 officially changed its name to Wuhan Library, and moved to its current address (No.86 Jianshe Avenue1) in February 2000 and opened it to the public.

Adhering to the tenet of "reader first, service first", Wuhan Library has taken various measures to facilitate readers, continuously expanded its service contents and innovated its service methods, and provided readers with various types and levels of library services such as borrowing, reading, multimedia audio-visual service, reference service, document retrieval, special topic retrieval, reader education, document delivery and document reproduction, and held various lectures, exhibitions and other reader activities. Through the automobile library, there are 45 books and periodicals service points outside the library, forming a Wuhan mobile book service network with Wuhan Library as the center, mobile cars as the link, service points as the terminal and covering cities, districts, streets and communities.

Wuhan Library also undertakes the work of Wuhan Library Society, and is responsible for providing professional guidance to the city's 13 district and county libraries, which promotes the overall development of Wuhan public libraries. In June 2000, Wuhan Library became an institutional member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), and since then, it has had the voice of Wuhan Library on the international stage of library specialty.

With its rich literature resources and good service, Wuhan Library has become an important place for Wuhan citizens to widely read, dabble in various disciplines and obtain all kinds of information, and has made important contributions to Wuhan's cultural construction and social and economic development.

In 2004, Wuhan Library was rated as a national first-class library by the Ministry of Culture.
