brief introduction
Ye Yiwei (1918.04.13 ~ 2013.02.26), a famous calligrapher and seal cutting theorist in China.
19 18 April 13, Ye Yiwei was born in Wuyi County, Jinhua Road, Zhejiang Province (now Jinhua City). He was born six months ago, his father died of illness, and his mother died when he was three years old. He lives in the city with his grandmother and nursing mother. After graduating from Hushan Primary School, he went to a private school to read ancient Chinese poetry. After that, he taught himself China literature and ancient Chinese, and dabbled extensively in other social subjects, laying a solid foundation for Chinese studies.
Ye Yiwei worked as a secretary in the army and government departments and was recommended to be a Chinese teacher in Hangzhou No.11 Middle School. The family lives in the faculty dormitory of more than 50 square meters allocated by the school. The study was transformed into a balcony. Apart from the desk and small bookcase, there are basically no other objects. Friends often visit, and only one person can sit in the study at most, while others stand and talk most of the time. At that time, Ye Yiwei was quite famous in Zhejiang seal cutting circle. He taught himself by copying the seal cutting works of Wu Changshuo and Zhao, and formed his own style.
After retirement, artistic creation became Ye Yiwei's main job, and most of his works were completed after retirement.
Ye Yiwei lived in an era that experienced the Northern Expedition, War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the War of Liberation and the "Ten-year Catastrophe". He usually says that "being born at an inopportune time leads to old age", but he can always cling to art in the changing situation. After the reform and opening up, it was the golden age of his artistic creation, and his main writings and creations were produced during these twenty years. He is a scholar who does not admire Li Rong, devotes himself to moral cultivation, keeps pace with the times and has little knowledge.
20 13 On February 26th, Comrade Ye Yiwei died in his hometown of Wuyi, Zhejiang, at the age of 96.
achievements of art
Ye Yiwei carved thousands of seals in his life, most of which were donated or given to friends. He donated his works to 77 units and institutions such as Zhejiang Museum and Ye Yiwei Art Museum. He only donated 1, 482 calligraphy seal cutting works and books, including 2 calligraphy and painting works13, 258 square seals and 28 seal cutting screens/. There are 730 books, including more than 20 academic works (including manuscripts) and more than 90 papers.
All the possessions in Ye Yiwei are only the 50-square-meter staff dormitory allocated by that school in Hang Cheng. He usually spends all his money on artistic creation and lives in poverty. The only time I sold a few seals in my later years was because my wife was seriously ill and needed medical expenses urgently, so I didn't want to burden my children too much.
In Ye Yiwei's works, we can see the solid foundation of Qin and Han seals, and we can also read the brushwork of Zhao, Wu Changshuo, Lai Chusheng and other modernists, but it is not static, but "specious" and full of "I". This shows that he is good at learning from tradition and integrating it into his own, so that "tradition" can be used by me. The "newness" created by Ye Yiwei in seal cutting is not the once popular "newness" in form, but the innovation of "poetic mind making seal"-examining and creating seal cutting works with the poet's feelings.
Ye Yiwei is also a prolific writer of seal cutting theory. He is the author of more than 20 widely influential seal cutting books, including History of Seal Cutting in China, Seal Cutting and Seal Cutting Skills in China, Series of Talks on Seal Cutting, Sequel of Seal Cutting Series and Interesting Talks on Seal Cutting. Among them, China Seal Cutting and Skills was reprinted 10 times, which is one of the most popular seal cutting textbooks in China. His creation serves his theoretical research, and in turn, the experience of theoretical research can be well reflected in his creation, which truly combines theory with practice and has influenced a generation of young and middle-aged seal engravers.
Character speech
20 1 1, Ye Yiwei commented on himself at the "Ye Yiwei Calligraphy Art Seal Carving Exhibition": My name is Ye Yiwei, so this grass root is reed grass root. I am 94 years old this year, and the grassroots are very old and ashamed. But the grass roots will change, such as Cordyceps sinensis, which we often say, is very valuable, so it can also change in calligraphy. But it is unrealistic for me, because I don't have this condition. Cordyceps sinensis grows on the plateau above 4000 meters above sea level. I grew up in Wuyi, Jinhua, and it is impossible to cultivate Cordyceps sinensis. So I am ashamed, please criticize and correct me.
Main work
Ye Yiwei is the author of Series Talks on Seal Cutting, Series Talks on Seal Cutting, Interesting Talks on Seal Cutting, Seal Cutting and Seal Cutting Techniques in China, Notes on Seal Cutting Insects, Appreciation of Seal Cutting, Yi Yin Wei Dialect, Yi Yin Wei Trace, Selected Poems of Yi Wei, A Brief History of Seal Cutting in China, a History of Seal Cutting in China, He has published more than 100 papers in Hong Kong professional newspapers such as Book Spectrum and Xi Ling Yi Cong, which has won favorable comments at home and abroad and has a wide influence. I have my own new views on the study of seal cutting. For example, I put forward the theory that seal cutting should be based on the Qin and Han Dynasties, the Qing Dynasty (especially the late Qing Dynasty), and the essence should be taken to develop it. Seal cutting should give full play to its social function, contribute to the construction of socialist spiritual civilization, emphasize the independence of seal cutting creation, and get rid of the status of vassal of painting and calligraphy; In creation, we should take the realm of expression as the first priority, and don't be bound by techniques. The creation of seal cutting develops in accordance with the law of "the coexistence of strangeness and righteousness", and seal carvers should improve their literary, artistic and moral cultivation. He also studied poetry, and his poetry creation was included in Selected Contemporary Poems of China, Selected 800 Poems of Contemporary Poets of China and Selected Contemporary Poems of China. Seal cutting and calligraphy works have participated in many exhibitions at home and abroad, and have been included in special collections or carved into forest of steles or collected in museums. In the spring of 2005, Xiling Printing Society held a seminar on "Poetry Printing" in Ye Yiwei Art Museum.
Ye Yiwei studied seal cutting, practice and theory go hand in hand, and he has his own opinions. He put forward "printing Qin and Han dynasties" and "seal cutting is always clear", and divided learning into two processes: first, learn from Qin and Han dynasties to inherit the tradition and lay a good foundation; Then, study the innovation and development of seal cutting in Qing Dynasty. Focus on the study of famous seal cutting thoughts, not only pursue form, but also try to integrate seal cutting with literature, combine form and content as much as possible, and explore in many ways without sticking to one pattern. On the altar, he was called "the seal of poetry". Seal cutting is in line with literature, with richer artistic connotation and more novel display form, which not only serves painting and calligraphy. But it is difficult to do and it is not easy to popularize. Some people call him "playing the piano alone" and setting up a portal. He is the author of more than ten books, including Series Lectures on Seal Cutting, Appreciation of Seal Cutting, China's Seal Cutting and Techniques, History of China's Seal Cutting, Research on Seal Cutting and Selected Poems of Yiwei. Among them, there are many new topics with simple writing, simple truth and enlightenment, which have great influence on seal cutting circles at home and abroad.
His poems emphasize: opening up the mind, capturing the image, making simple words, and reflecting the times through implication. Five-character poems have distinct characteristics and won praise from the poetic circles.
Calligraphy, because of its connection with seal cutting, has many seal scripts, followed by cursive script, and occasionally writes official script, which has personality and its content is often written as poetry. I began to learn painting after I was 80 years old. For physical reasons, I seldom write.
Social assessment
Ye Yiwei is one of the few seal cutting masters in China whose theory and creation are parallel. He has his own opinions, and puts forward "printing Qin and Han dynasties" and "sealing the Qing dynasty", and divides learning into two processes: inheriting tradition and innovating development; Ye Yiwei took the famous seal cutting thought as the core, not only pursued the form, but also tried to combine seal cutting with literature, combining the form with the content, and made many explorations, which was called "poetic mind printing" in the printing industry. Ye Yiwei has written a large number of theoretical works on seal cutting, and now many young and middle-aged seal carvers who are active in the printing altar have benefited from his seal cutting theory.
Liu Jiang, executive director of Xiling Printing Society and professor of China Academy of Fine Arts: Ye Yiwei is a respected elder with profound attainments in poetry, printing, calligraphy and literature. He is a noble and humble person who never drops out of school. He is a true master of virtue and artistry. My understanding of Mr. Yi Wei's "poetic mind making seal" is that seal cutting creation closely combines seal cutting content with formal beauty, which enhances the connotation of seal cutting and greatly improves its appreciation. Among them, several seals left a deep impression on me, which were full of interest: for example, the oval Zhu's "seeking truth" and "seeking" were long and elegant, and I bowed my head to "meticulous and full". In the gourd-shaped seal, Zhu Wen has only one word "boring", which is generally intuitive. Think about it, it is a "stuffed gourd"; The white print "Yin Yinni", with rough lines and large pieces of red, reminds people of the calm and heavy "Yin Yinni"; The word "public" and "private" are printed in a circle, with the word "public" occupying a large space and the word "private" occupying a small space, and the form is concise, natural and meaningful; When Jian Xi was printed, the word "Xi" was written in pictographic ancient Chinese, which is both vernacular and Zhu Wen. There are many such examples in Mr. Wei's printing, and he is amazed every time he reads them.
Ye Nansheng, the eldest son of Ye Yiwei: My father is a very traditional scholar, very serious and usually doesn't talk much. He is always immersed in his own art world, always creating. Sometimes when I see him taking a lunch break, I actually close my eyes and think, and even write a draft silently, and write it immediately after getting up. However, his life requirements are very low. As far as I can remember, he never bought himself a dress, and all his salary was given to his mother, who never complained about what she did. He can't even open liquefied gas. He can only turn on the tap because he wants to wash his face.
